INFORMATION SERVICES INTERN

Part-Time|Non-exempt

Reports to: Youth & Teen Services Supervisor

The Novi Public Library is a vibrant, fast-paced class six library located within Oakland County. The Library was awarded the "Community Builder Award" in 2021 from the Novi Chamber of Commerce for its innovative approach to reaching its community by introducing the first self-service kiosk in Michigan, called Lakeshore Lending Library. Primary Duties & Responsibilities:Work with a mentor who will provide guidance and ensure that the intern is exposed to a variety of assignments and experiences, comprising a well-rounded public librarian internship program.Learn to provide reference services, readers' advisory and computer assistance using a variety of collections, material and formats. Recognize the essential role of reference services in public librarianship and prioritize time at the Information Desk over other responsibilities as necessary.Learn to participate in collection development and maintenance as needed, keeping within monetary and physical space constraints.Learn to plan, implement and promote programming services appropriate to the needs of the community.Learn to engage in outreach opportunities within the community.Other Duties & Responsibilities:

Enforce Library policies relevant to public use; respond to emergencies and provide support, as needed; act quickly, exercising good judgment.Communicate effectively with patrons, co-workers and professional colleagues.Work positively and collaboratively across departments to accomplish departmental and Library goals.Foster and promote diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace and the community.Adapt and respond to multiple priorities, interruptions and demands; resolve problems in a positive manner.Perform other duties as assigned.Job Qualifications:

Currently enrolled in a Master's Degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA accredited school.Must be able to provide a minimum of 1 year commitment.Knowledge of adult, teen and youth literature.Proficient in MS Office, Google Workspace, internet browsers and other computer related technologies.Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.Dedication to public service and providing excellent customer service.Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to organize work, set priorities and manage projects to completion.Enthusiastic, positive, friendly, self-motivated, creative and approachable.Strong obligation to confidentiality.Ability to speak multiple languages helpful.May require a valid Michigan driver's license based on assignment.Special Projects:

Intern projects can include a variety of tasks, such as the following:

Updates reading lists for youth, teen and adults, including seniorsUsing lists, verifies authors and titles are in correct collectionsProvides material recommendations to add to a variety of collectionsWorking Environment:

May be required to: sit, stand, bend, stoop, crouch, reach, kneel and/or walk for extended periods of time; carry books, boxes of books or objects weighing up to 50 pounds; push or pull wheeled carts with a total weight of up to 500 pounds; operate assigned equipment; pick up litter; spread ice melt; use the telephone, keyboard, computer mouse.Evening, weekend and some holiday hours are required.

Hours:

This is a part-time position at 15 hours per week. Position concludes after two years or upon completion of Master of Library / Information Science Degree, whichever occurs first.

Preferred schedule:

Monday 9:30am-2:30pm

Wednesday 4-9pm

Saturday 9:30am-2:30pm

Hourly rate:

$19.74 per hour
