Summary:
The Director of Facilities plays a critical role in overseeing all aspects of facilities management across the organization's footprint in Chicago. This position requires a strategic leader with exceptional management skills, a strong understanding of facility operations, and the ability to drive efficiency and cost-effectiveness while maintaining high standards of safety and functionality.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has direct reports.
Minimum Qualifications and Skills
Bachelor's degree in Property/ Facilities Management, Construction, Engineering, Business Administration, or related field.
At least 5 years’ experience in construction, facilities management, or engineering, or in operations at a fast-paced organization.
At least 3 years’ experience in a supervisory role.
Strong understanding of facility operations, maintenance best practices, and regulatory requirements.
Excellent leadership, communication, conflict resolution and interpersonal skills.
Proficiency in project management and vendor relationship management.
Experience working cross-functionally with teams to address internal needs and to support objectives.
Ability to prioritize and have a knack for identifying internal and external blockers.
Strong service and support orientation.
Willingness to learn and adapt in the midst of new and shifting priorities.
Ability to read, analyze, interpret and write technical construction documents, procedures, regulations, contracts and reports.
Ability to develop schedules and assign duties.
Ability to articulate a vision, set high standards, and facilitate sound execution.
Ability to effectively manage budgets.
Ability to perform minor construction and repair jobs.
Access to a vehicle and valid Illinois Driver’s License required.
Key Functions:
The primary goal of the Director of Facilities is to ensure the safety and security of staff and members, and the successful operations of all properties owned and occupied by BSCO, BSCDC, Bright Star Church, and St. James Church.
Primary Job Responsibilities
Maintenance
Schedule and monitor routine maintenance, including preventative maintenance on major electrical and mechanical systems.
Analyze facilities’ condition and operations; provides suggestions for consideration.
Technology:
Maintain strong working relationship with all technology contractors.
Oversee Bright Star Technology Requisition System and Technology Inventory.
Oversee technology services including security, systems, networking, telecommunications, and services, with a focus on advancing operational effectiveness.
Strategic Planning:
Ensure facilities comply with relative laws, regulations and safety standards.
Assist with long range planning, including renovations, additions and new buildings.
Facilities Management:
Oversee the day-to-day operations of all facilities, including offices, school, shelter and other properties.
Create and manage facility budgets and expenses to ensure cost-effectiveness and compliance with financial targets.
Develop and implement processes to optimize facility operations, maintenance, and energy usage.
Coordinate with facility staff members to ensure consistent standards and practices across all locations.
Act as liaison between CPS and Bright Star.
Oversee all facility requests, including room set up.
Space Planning and Utilization:
Collaborate with senior leadership to assess space needs and develop efficient space utilization strategies.
Oversee space planning initiatives, including layouts, rental space, and expansion projects.
Security and Campus Care:
Ensure compliance with local regulations, building codes, and safety standards across all facilities.
Develop and implement safety protocols and emergency preparedness plans.
Conduct regular inspections to identify potential hazards and to keep a safe working environment.
Oversee safety and security; respond to breakdowns quickly.
Vendor Management:
Manage relationships with external vendors, contractors, and service providers.
Negotiate contracts and service agreements to obtain favorable terms and pricing.
Monitor vendor performance and quality of service delivery.
Team Leadership:
Build and lead a high-performing facilities team.
Provide guidance, coaching, and professional development opportunities to team members.
Foster a culture of respect for people, collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement within the facilities department.
Oversee the facilities team including hiring, performance evaluations and disciplinary actions.
Other duties as needed.
