Responsibilities
Examines and performs testing on blood, body fluids, tissue and other specimens to aid in diagnosis; operates complex instruments to test biological specimens; evaluates and solves problems related to the collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis; follows standard procedures related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis; follows standard procedures to perform routine, timed and STAT moderate and complex laboratory tests and recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems maintaining written or computer documentation; maintains instruments by performing maintenance procedures and calibration; reports all critical values following laboratory protocol; operates and utilizes necessary programs on the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Hospital Information System (HIS) utilizing a PC; analyzes quality control data, evaluates the results and takes appropriate action to maintain accuracy; draws blood specimens from patients; monitors the work pending log of designated sections and documents action taken; maintains a neat and efficient work area by cleaning bench tops, equipment/instruments and replenishes supplies in a timely manner; works as a generalist to include Blood Bank, Core Lab, and Microbiology; communicates and uses appropriate customer relation skills with physicians, patients, families and healthcare team in person and via telephone; responds to overhead pages; maintains accurate and complete records by recognizing abnormal and/or critical values, takes action following established protocols and/or refers to supervisor; documents customer complaints, testing and reporting errors and presents each to supervisor for corrective actions; adheres to current Infection Control and Safety Standards; abides by and enforces all compliance requirements and policies and performs these responsibilities in an ethical manner consistent with the organization's values; adheres to hospital policies including confidentiality; safely performs functions which require minimal supervision; utilizes proper body mechanics when moving, positioning and transferring patients or when moving equipment/supplies with or without assistance; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime and call as required; related duties as required.
Qualifications
Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) from an accredited institution as approved and accepted by the University of South Alabama
-or-
completion of a medical laboratory technician clinical training program and registry eligible with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists as a Medical Laboratory Technician.
