TITLE: Infection Prevention/Quality Registered Nurse

DEPARTMENT: Quality Assurance

POSITION STATUS/HOURS: Part-time .8 FTE (64 hours/pay period)

Department hours are Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Position is 4 days per week. Day off is flexible to meet the needs of the department.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Infection Preventionist is a qualified individual with knowledge of CDC guidelines and definitions of infections, TJC standards, and federal and state regulations. She/he is responsible for the investigation, reporting, prevention, and control of infections among patients and personnel. By authority of the Infection Prevention Committee, she/he may institute collection of cultures and initiate appropriate isolation precautions. She/he is responsible for assisting with in-service programs related to infection prevention and control and must be able to demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of complete infection control and prevention processes in the healthcare setting. Demonstrates knowledge of risk stratified statistics as applicable to trending all infections. Demonstrates understanding of standard and isolation precautions as set forth by the CDC. Demonstrates knowledge of microbiology, and modes of transmission of disease entities. Demonstrates the ability to teach principles and practical application of infection prevention to all levels of healthcare personnel.

The Quality Registered Nurse is responsible for ongoing review and abstraction of health care quality information, obtained from a variety of sources, including the patient medical record, as well as quality data that is collected throughout the facility. The position is responsible for entering the data into the various databases, both internal and external, where quality data is deposited and displayed. It requires the ability to analyze health care data from conceptualization through presentation of the data. It requires proficiency with analytical tools (Excel), knowledge of data analysis methodology, use of presentation software, strong communication skills and a strong commitment to and affinity for delivering the highest level of customer service.

ESSENTIAL TASKS/DUTIES:
  • Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of complete infection control and prevention processes in the healthcare setting and is the organizational lead for Infection Prevention
  • Demonstrates knowledge of risk stratified statistics as applicable to trending all infections
  • Demonstrates understanding of standard and isolation precautions as set forth by the CDC
  • Demonstrates ability to teach principles and practical application of infection prevention to all levels of healthcare personnel
  • Demonstrates ability to develop infection prevention policies and procedures
  • Demonstrates knowledge of microbiology, and modes of transmission of disease entities
  • Develops and implements a system for identifying, investigating, reporting and preventing the spread of healthcare acquired infections among patients of all ages, in addition to healthcare personnel
  • Investigates infections, especially those occurring above established thresholds, and/or in clusters by patient units
  • Completes required CMR reports to Public Health Department in a timely and accurate manner
  • Communicates appropriate reports to the Infection Prevention Committee and forwards them as indicated to other committees, including the Medical Staff Committee
  • Able to navigate the entire medical record, both paper and electronic portions.
  • Able to navigate the querying mechanisms of Electronic Medical Record systems and other external databases.
  • Able to teach other clinicians on how to improve documentation and services to meet national standards.
  • Keep well organized, documented, and maintained data files.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Current RN License in the state of Wisconsin.
  • Clinical experience and knowledge of CDC guidelines/definitions
  • Familiar with The Joint Commission Standards and Federal/State Regulations
