Location:
Los Angeles, California, New York City, New York, London, England, and Dubai, United Arab EmiratesProject Title:
The Lawyer (Working Title)Produced by:
Adham Al MallaFormat:
Mini TV ShowEpisode Length:
30 minutesNumber of Episodes:
5-6 episodesWe are developing a drama series set in Syria, following the story of a lawyer whose life is shaped by the war and its aftermath. The series explores deep, character-driven narratives with a focus on a limited number of locations and a small but significant cast.Series Overview:The story centers around a once-ordinary lawyer who used to handle civil cases like marriage certificates but has now dedicated his career to defending young men falsely accused of terrorism. As the war in Syria escalates, many individuals are wrongfully charged, and the lawyer takes on these cases pro bono, driven by his love for his country despite its economic collapse. His son, who lives in Germany, frequently calls via Skype, urging him to leave Syria and join him, but the lawyer remains steadfast. A particularly heartbreaking case, in which the lawyer is convinced of the young defendant's innocence, drives him to the edge. The series will include surreal dream sequences and flashbacks that blur the line between reality and the lawyer's psychological torment, creating a unique, non-linear narrative structure.Visual and Character Notes:The lawyer is always seen in an old, worn brown suit, symbolizing his poverty but also his attempt to retain dignity. By the final episode, he appears in a sharp, new suit, representing a shift in character. The show will use minimal, stark locations like the lawyer's office, the courtroom, and his modest home, amplifying the focus on character and dialogue. We are particularly interested in working with someone who understands Arabic and/or Syrian issues, ideally someone of Arab or Syrian descent.
