POSITION SUMMARY:

The Chief Development Officer (CDO) is responsible for leadership and oversight of all fundraising and communication efforts at HumanKind. This position provides leadership, vision, and strategic direction for HumanKind’s development activities. The CDO assures that all development and communication programs operate effectively and efficiently, meet financial growth goals, manage human and financial resources, align fund raising initiatives with programmatic needs, and continually evaluate performance in relation to internal outcomes, external requirements, and community needs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serves as member of the President’s Executive Team and actively participates in the organizational planning and leadership engagement.

Provide comprehensive leadership and direct supervision of the development and communications team, ensuring program outcomes and objectives are realized in a cost-effective manner.

Educates and empowers staff to enhance their effectiveness in development activities and provides ongoing performance and other feedback for direction of supervised staff.

Develop and maintain written operating policies and procedures for all development activities.

Develop systems and metrics to effectively evaluate and improve the quality of development services.

Build, cultivate, and maintain positive relationships with donors, foundations and prospects, ensuring effective engagement and stewardship. Helping to identify new revenue and partnerships.

Development and overall responsibility of setting and achieving annual goals and plans to diversify and increase organizational budget through a comprehensive development strategy to include foundation and individual donors (major donor, smaller-level donors, online, etc.) as well as other appropriate sources.

Responsible for the management and growth of a Fundraising portfolio of donors statewide to ensure their continued donations and financial support of the organization.

Oversees the effective management of Raiser’s Edge database and stewardship activities including donor records, gift reporting, and gift acknowledgement ensuring timely and accurate gift and financial reports.

Oversees the grant process ensuring accountability to funding entities and maximizing revenue from grants and foundations.

Work cooperatively with other agency personnel as part of the Cross Functional leadership team and in interactions with other departments of the agency.

Work together with COO to determine goals and strategy for program-specific fundraising and build the skills of program staff to be extensions of the Development team.

Work with the CFO to manage development programs within allocated budgets, while identifying and implementing cost-effective methods of operation.

Participate in the orientation of new board members annually and share the development plan with the Board, partnering with them to leverage their networks and increase philanthropic support.

Prepare development reports, including plans, accomplishments and challenges for Executive Management and Board Meetings.

Responsible for staff leadership support for the HumanKind Board of Directors Development Committee. Serve as a resource to the Board Development Committee chair to ensure documentation and meeting materials are created and distributed as required.

Maintain clear and regular communication with the board of directors, board committees, community partners and donors.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of effective communication strategies to enhance donor engagement and promote the organization’s mission, vision, and values.

Demonstrate knowledge and experience with standard office and clerical procedures, current office technology and computer programs/applications including Microsoft Suite, Excel, Power-Point, and Adobe.

Deep understanding of various fundraising methods, including major gifts, planned giving, corporate partnerships and grants.

Proficiency is donor management software, preferable Raiser’s Edge, and other relevant fundraising technologies.

Ability to lead, inspire, and manage a team, setting clear goals, providing mentorship and ensuring accountability.

Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain effective relationships with colleagues, board members, donors, and other key stakeholders.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to craft compelling messages that inspire donor engagement.

Abilit to navigate challenges, adapt to changes, and innovate in the face of shifting fundraising landscapes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Business, Public Relations, or a related field. Advanced degree preferred.

Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership role.

Proven track record of success in major gift fundraising, capital campaigns, corporate sponsorships, and foundation relations.

Valid Driver’s License and acceptable driving record.

Complete, pass and maintain all required background checks and drug test.
