GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Serves as a nurse substitute due to the staff member's absence. During a prolong absence as defined by board policy, the substitute is responsible for performing all essential functions identified on the School Nurse job description.ESSENTIAL DUTIES:(These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)Maintains student health records, reviews records of entering students for immunizations, ensures all components of School Health Entrance Requirement are complete, notes health conditions documented on forms, collects information for State reports, and keeps emergency information up to date;Administer individual mandated screening of vision and hearing, evaluate, refer and follow?up as required by Virginia school law and School Board policy;Assists sick or injured students (calls parents of ill students and assists until parent arrives) and staff, performs routine and emergency first aid;Administers medication to appropriate students, with parental permission and a doctor's order for prescription medication; keeps medication permission forms on file;Complete necessary forms and procedures for Bloodborne Pathogen exposure incidents and situations related to Workers Compensation as outlined in Exposure Control Plan, School Board policy and Regulations;Trains staff to administer medications under certain circumstances in the nurse's absence or for field trips. Ensures proper documentation; Maintains record of CPR, First Aid trained staff and posts it in the clinic;Serves as a member of the School Crisis and Child Study Team, as directed by Principal, participate in wellness programs for staff, in?service education and attends all regularly scheduled staff meetings;Supplies and adequately maintains the school clinic; checks first aid supplies and equipment daily; secures medications including controlled substances as required;Provide immunizations as dictated by School Board;Manages outbreaks of infectious illnesses by utilizing knowledge of infectious illness processes with input from physicians, the health department and district guidelines to determine criteria for school exclusion; follows health department directives regarding management of such illnesses;Notifies appropriate staff members on a need-to-know basis, of students with health concerns, provides necessary in-service training and/or emergency care plans;Refers additional health concerns as appropriate to a guidance counselor, school psychologist, physician, Child Protective Services, school administrator, health department officials, school 504 Coordinator;Serves as a liaison with public health department, health care providers and other community agencies;Ensures compliance with law that all schools with at least one student with diabetes have at all times two staff members trained in the administration of insulin and glucagon;Develop or assist with development of Individual Health Care Plans for students with medical conditions, including allergies; may educate appropriate staff on necessary components of such health care plan including criteria for medical emergencies and specific actions to take for inclusion on IEP or 504 plans;Ensures compliance with all laws protecting the confidentiality of medical information and obtains written consent of parent/guardian to share information;Performs clerical duties requiring the use of computers, typing, filing and duplicating related to school nurse functions;Assists in enforcing rules and discipline; performs student supervision duties as required;Advises administrators on appropriate interventions to meet student needs;Advises administrators, teachers, and cafeteria staff (with consent) on all students with food allergies; develops or obtains care plans for students with food allergies and advises school personnel in recognizing the signs of food allergies and the appropriate steps to take including the administration of epinephrinePerform related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of health care and nursing techniques and principles, including pharmacology; state and federal regulations affecting school RN responsibilities; basic record keeping processes, including alpha-numeric filing systems. Knowledge of, and ability to work with, student IEPs (Individual Education Plans) and to contribute as needed to Section 504 processes. Knowledge of communicable diseases and ability to report such diseases to appropriate municipal and governmental agencies. Ability and skill to make physical, social and emotional assessments requiring professional nursing knowledge and judgment. Ability to administer First Aid and CPR; administer medications to students, and knowledge of attendant laws and policies for dispensing, delegating medication administration and control of medications. Ability to respond consistently and appropriately to all students in a calm, reassuring and nurturing manner. Handle confidential matters and information in a professional manner; establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of people from diverse backgrounds.

Lift objects weighing up to 40 pounds, moving of students weighing up to 150 pounds with assistive equipment may be necessary.; perform tasks requiring bilateral dexterity; move quickly from one physical location to another; walk, stand, drive, crouch, crawl, bend and/or kneel. Occasional movement of students by wheelchair and other mechanical devices may be necessary. Occasional exposure to potentially infectious diseases and bloodborne pathogens is necessary.
