Generally, system programmers are tasked with managing the mainframe hardware configuration and ensuring the operating system is installed, customized, and maintained. They ensure that the system and its services are available and functioning to meet service-level agreements. For installations operating 24/7, careful planning is required to minimize disruptions to operational activities.
