Summary:

The Senior Vice President & Chief Medical Officer (CMO) provides strategic, operational, and inclusive executive leadership for University of Vermont Health programs in patient safety, healthcare quality, health equity, accreditation and regulatory affairs, medical informatics, medical staff services, professionalism, peer review, risk management, and clinical integration and process improvement.

The CMO develops and successfully implements strategies for exceptional and highly reliable patient outcomes across all UVM Health clinical departments and care settings, within changing scientific, technological, policy, and financial environments. The CMO is responsible on a daily basis to operate programs to achieve UVM Health goals in patient safety, quality, and equity, and to support programs in high value care and population health. The CMO supervises Chief Medical Officers, Partner Quality Officers, and leaders in the Network Quality Shared Service, Medical Informatics, Network Medical Staff Services, and Care Coordination System across all UVM Health partners and clinical sites, including UVM Health Network Medical Group, UVM Medical Center (UVMMC), Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital (CVPH), Central Vermont Medical Center (CVMC), Porter Medical Center (PMC), Elizabethtown Community Hospital (ECH), Alice Hyde Medical Center (AHMC), Home Health and Hospice (HHH), and Post-Acute Care facilities. The CMO works closely as a partner with the SVP & Executive Director of the Medical Group and the SVP & Chief Nursing Executive, as well as with Network Department Chairs and SVP High Value Care to improve clinical pathways, capacity management, and health outcomes. The CMO is responsible for improving and sustaining performance in safety and quality measures. The CMO ensures oversight and compliance with the standards, regulations, and laws established by applicable licensing, accreditation, regulatory, and governmental bodies.

The Senior Vice President & Chief Medical Officer (CMO) reports directly to the Executive Vice President & Medical Group President, UVM Health.

UVM Health-Leader Relationships:The CMO works closely as a partner with the SVP & Medical Group Executive Director and SVP & Chief Nursing Executive, as well as with Network Department Chairs; Network Director Integrated Cancer Programs; SVP High Value Care; Partner Chief Nursing Officers; Partner Presidents/Chief Operating Officers; EVP & Chief Operating Officer; SVP & Chief Information Officer; SVP & General Counsel; and CEO.

UVM-Leader Relationships:

Larner College of Medicine (LCOM) Senior Associate Dean for Research and Network Director for Research; UVM Vice President for Research; and LCOM Senior Associate Dean for Education and Network Director for Education.

Education Requirements:

Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) from an accredited medical school

Board certification in a specialty recognized by the AMA or AOA

Medical licensure in Vermont and/or New York

M.P.H., M.S., M.H.A., or similar degrees or credentials are welcomed

Experience Requirements:

Minimum of 7 years as a physician, with at least 5 years progressive physician leadership experience

Experience in an academic health system, academic medical center, or large integrated health system

Experience working with colleges/schools of medicine

Experience with leading and achieving data-driven outcomes through operational excellence

Contemporary knowledge in physician leadership, patient safety, healthcare quality, health equity, performance improvement, healthcare accreditation and regulations, patient experience, medical informatics, technology, credentialing and privileging, professionalism, peer review, risk management, medical education programs, and clinical research and trials.
