I. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

Job Description Summary:

The Research Associate will work in the Department of Global, Health in the Milken Institute School of Public Health. The Lab’s research program focuses on the role of viral characteristics in determining transmission potential. The Research Associate will participate in the laboratory testing and analysis of specimens collected by or derived for Prof. Mores’ network of research projects. The research associate will report to Professor Mores and will work directly with him.

I. Execution of BSL-3 operations

  • The research associate will assist with the execution of laboratory operations in the Milken Institute School of Public Health.These responsibilities include verifying of equipment function, protocol development, cell culture establishment and maintenance, assay performance and validation, and recording and reporting of results.

II.Analysis of specimens

  • The research associate will lead (under the direction of Dr. Mores) the analysis of specimens for research priorities to include: detection and characterization of human pathogens including dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and other BSL-2 and BSL-3 agents.
  • They will participate in offsite/overseas collaborative research efforts as required to include development of techniques, and collection and testing of samples.
  • They will perform original research under Dr. Mores’ guidance, both individually and collaboratively with scientific collaborators to be published in peer-reviewed venues.

III.Laboratory maintenance

  • The research associate will maintain all laboratory spaces, equipment, inventories, cultures, and colonies in a kempt and organized manner to allow for unimpeded execution of multiple, overlapping research efforts.

Performs other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a master’s degree and 1 year of experience in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A strong background in classical virological techniques with emphasis on viral culture in mammalian cell culture systems, serologic assays, and molecular detection is desired.
  • Ability in understanding of the procedures, and willingness to perform them, related to animal infection assays.
  • Able to be certified to work in (A)BSL-3 (with respiratory protection), enroll in any institutionally or laboratory-required health surveillance programs.
  • Once trained, ability to operate with minimal direction, solve complexities that arise in the course of research, and effectively manage small-group dynamics.
  • Experience with cultivation and testing of viral pathogens is preferred.

Hiring Range

$43,888.00 - $64,601.04
