The Certified School Nurse (CSN) identifies and treatshealth conditions among students in the school setting. The CSN providesinstruction for the student’s general wellbeing and disease prevention. TheCertified School Nurse must assess the student’s physical condition in theschool setting and refer the student to appropriate resources as needed to besuccessful in school.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Participates in Individualized Education Program (IEP)meeting plans by including assessment planning, health history or medicalreview for the student
Promotes healthy practices and nursing services to thestudents so they will be successful in general education classes
Coordinates services with other special services personnelwithin the school to support students
Communicates with school administrators, teachers and otherstaff members about students with specific health problems adhering to HIPAAand federal laws
Follows the school’s district policies for health, emergencycare, accidents, drug abuse and bullying
Notifies school Administers, local health department,parents and staff about confirmed communicable diseases within the school
Writes student’s IEP goals related to student’s healthcondition that is impacting student’s learning
Completes and files school and state reports regardingscreenings, immunizations, physicals, etc.
Charts pertinent information on student's health file
Monitors compliance of school health program with federal,state and local laws, regulations and policies as applicable
Prepares health reports for supervisor, board of educationand the health department
Provides first aid care and medically prescribed services
Maintains security of school health supplies and medications
Instructs students in health education according to thestate curriculum
Serves as a resource person on health issues
Provides staff development on health-related topics forschool staff and volunteers
Screens and conducts health appraisals for students andstaff
Provides follow-up evaluations on students as required
Recommends corrective action where problems are identified
Corresponds with parents on health needs of children
Identifies abnormal growth and development, symptoms ofdisease and discuss with parents
Ability to coordinate and facilitate services between theschool, local health agency, and other community resources
Ability to develop positive working relationships
Minimum Requirements:
Current nursing license for the state in which the nursepractices
Certification or Credential in school nursing, required
One year prior school nursing experience required
Pediatric experience, preferred
Complies with all relevant professional standards ofpractice
Participation and completion of Amegis' Competency programwhen applicable
Current CPR if applicable
TB Questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable
Current Health certificate (per contract or stateregulation)
Must meet all federal, state and local requirements
Successful completion of new hire training as applicable tojob site
Understand patient confidentiality and HIPAArequirements
Ability to effectively elicit/provide information to andfrom appropriate individuals (including, but not limited to, supervisors, co-workers,clients) via strong communication skills; proficiency in the English languageis required
Computer proficiency required
Must be at least 18 years of age
