Job Description Summary:

The Center for Career Services is GW’s central career services office supporting undergraduate students and alumni in their career and professional development. Through personal career coaching, specialized programs, premier internship opportunities, and connections with top-tier employers, they help students realize and advance their career and professional goals. The career services team is committed to creating an anti-racist, innovative, energized and positive environment for staff, students and alumni to discover their best selves.

The Center for Career Services seeks an Industry Career Coach to direct and manage the development, delivery, and evaluation of all activities that facilitate the advanced career development of students and alumni seeking job roles in U.S. Government, Politics, Social Impact, Economics, and Consulting. This includes positions in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors; such as public policy, federal government, human services, criminal justice, think tanks, consulting, and economics. They will be responsible for creating and sustaining specialized, industry-specific resources including: online resources, networking and mentoring programs; employment and internship opportunities; and the most current information related to industry trends, standards, and career growth.

This position reports to the Director for Career Learning and Experiences. The Industry Career Coach, US Government, Economics, and Consulting will be responsible for the following:

  • Conducts individual and group career coaching sessions to educate students and alumni on industry cluster areas, develop and refine career plans, and review and enhance search materials and strategies. Partners with career exploration coaches to provide information on industry-specific exploration and core skills.
  • Develops, delivers, and regularly evaluates workshops and other educational programming that employ innovative learning strategies to educate students and alumni about advanced career management skills and industry cluster areas.
  • Develops and maintains expertise and advanced knowledge in assigned industry cluster area(s); Communicates industry expertise to students and alumni through services and resources.
  • Works with employer development and relations staff to establish and enhance collaborative partnerships with school-specific career staff, related university departments, faculty, parents, alumni to identify needs to develop and deliver industry cluster-specific programming and services; Serves as an advisor and resource to student clubs and organizations that align with the industry cluster.

The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position. The position is based at GW’s Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC. The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 2 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of state and federal agency hiring practices, federal resume composition, USAJobs, contracting, government, and congressional internships.
  • Familiarity with case interviews for management and/or economic consulting and the recruiting process for consulting.
  • Experience working with college students, including working knowledge of coaching and student development theories and practices.
  • Professional experience in career coaching and counseling, career development, experiential learning, educational program development and delivery, corporate recruiting, industry, or related fields is desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across diverse groups and contribute to inclusivity in the campus community.
  • Strong communication, presentation, writing, project management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience developing collaborative partnerships with both internal and external stakeholders; ideally working with faculty, alumni, and employers within the industry cluster.
  • Experience in industry focus (government) or advising/coaching students on industry-specific careers. Specialized knowledge of industry-specific hiring practices, job roles, career tracks, and professional expectations. Ideal candidates will have a background in U.S. Government, Politics, Social Impact, Economics, and Consulting tools such as: Handshake, PeopleGrove, LinkedIn, Facebook, Adobe Creative Suite, WebEx, Skype, Blackboard, course management systems, Google and Microsoft Applications
  • Supervisory, service management, marketing and outreach experience a plus
  • Experience working with web-based career management, communication and collaboration.

Hiring Range

$57,553.66 - $79,165.63
