With that in mind, our program is designed to advance the knowledge and capabilities of pharmacists to become leaders within the ever-changing and complex research operation. Our residents will work directly with world-renowned clinical research physicians, with a strong focus on early phase clinical trials. Graduates of our program will gain expertise in the regulatory requirements that govern clinical research, become adept in the clinical care of research subjects, and demonstrate skill in the processes required to support clinical research - from opening clinical trials, to pharmacy operations and clinical care of research subjects, through trial closure.Core Rotations:The activities associated with clinical research can fluctuate in intensity depending on several variables, including resident interest and other scheduling considerations. As such, most of the rotations will be longitudinal in nature to allow you to get a richer set of experiences.Introductory blocks are completed during the first 12 weeks, including Orientation/Introduction to Investigational Drug Service (4 weeks), Protocol Management Orientation (4 weeks), Early Phase Clinical Trials Clinical Support Orientation (2 weeks), and Leukemia Clinical Trials Clinical Support Orientation (2 weeks). After the completion of the introductory blocks, the resident’s day-to-day schedule will be created every 2 weeks. The preceptors declare what meetings (SIVs, IRB, etc.) are scheduled for the next 2 weeks, and a schedule is established such that the resident will spend 1 day/week staffing (with the operations rotation), 1 day/week in the Early Phase Clinical Trials Clinic, and an average of 1 day/week with Protocol Management. The remaining time will be filled out with longitudinal activities relating to Protocol Development, ACTG Informatics, Leukemia Clinical Trial Clinical Support, Medication Safety, as well as time to prepare for IRB meetings, preceptorship, and for research. This schedule is created by the RPD (or designee) in conjunction with the resident such that expectations are established, but not overwhelming. Note that not every learning experience will be active during every schedule. For example, IRB meetings are once a month. When a meeting is scheduled, time will be allotted for preparation and attendance. If there is no meeting, there will be no activities for that learning experience during that 2 week block. The longitudinal schedule is suspended for the 6 week Leadership and Administration Learning Experience and for a self-improvement/research/staffing month after ASHP Midyear. The following rotations are required for successful completion of the residency program:Block rotations:Orientation/Introduction to the Investigational Drug Service (4 weeks)Protocol Management Orientation (4 weeks)Leadership and Administration (6 weeks)Longitudinal rotations: Starting week 13 through June 30, unless noted otherwise.Informatics/ACTG Clinical Trial SupportEarly Phase Clinical Trials Clinical Support (2 week block orientation then longitudinal)Leukemia Clinical Trial Support (2 week block orientation then longitudinal)Investigational Drug Service Pharmacy OperationsProtocol ManagementPreceptorship on Rotation: Assigned Layered Learning with APPE students on rotation, varied lengthProfessional DevelopmentResearch Project [starting first week]Office of Research Subject Protection (Institutional Review Board) [starting first week]Medication SafetyProtocol DevelopmentEducationElectives can be developed based on the resident’s interest.About Roswell Park:Founded in 1898 as the first dedicated cancer center in the United States, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center has been at the forefront of cancer research and treatment for over 100 years.
