Nature of Work

This is skilled work involving several trades. Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs various skilled and semi-skilled tasks, including carpentry and masonry to repair and maintain bridges, buildings, equipment, storm drainage structures, etc. The employee operates machinery, dump trucks, and specialized power and hand tools to carry out assignments.

The working hours for this position will be Monday - Friday, 7:00 AM - 3:00 PM; however, as a critical employee, will be expected to be on-call 24/7/365 for emergencies.

A position may require related duties not listed, if necessary, to accomplish the work of the department.)Builds and sets forms; pours and finishes concrete.Lays brick and blockOperates motor vehicles such as dump trucks and pick-up trucks to deliver materials to job sites, or snowplow-equipped dump trucks and pick-up trucks to remove snow.Operates equipment such as air compressors and their air-driven tools (tampers, jackhammers, etc.), concrete pumps, concrete finishing machines, gunite machines, water pumps, sandblasters, concrete saws, etc.Operates power and hand tools that are typically used in the carpentry and masonry trades.Adheres to pertinent safety rules and regulations.May lead lower-level employees in carrying out tasks.Other duties as assigned.Minimum Qualification Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES :

Working knowledge of skilled and semi-skilled construction and maintenance trades/labor tasks and the machine tools and equipment to accomplish them

Ability to follow instructions; to operate trucks listed

Ability to read blueprints

Ability to lead others

Ability to work outside under adverse weather conditions

Ability to stand for prolonged periods

Ability to climb, stoop, kneel, and reach

Ability to push, lift, and/or move heavy objects

Ability to maintain good working relations with fellow workers, supervisors, and the general public

Ability to utilize a computer and computer software for various needs (i.e. - timekeeping, performance management, etc.)EDUCATION:Possession of a high school or vocational-technical school diploma or a GED Certificate.

EXPERIENCE:Three (3) years' of trades/laboring experience in carpentry and masonry.

LICENSE:Valid CDL Class "A" driver's license with "O" restriction and air brake and tank vehicle endorsements with no more than three (3) points. Valid Class "C" driver's license acceptable for job entry, but must obtain valid CDL Class "A" license with "O" restriction and air brake and tank vehicle endorsements within six (6) months of appointment to the position.

SAFETY:

Must comply with all Federal (OSHA), and State of Maryland (MOSH), safety regulations and applicable Harford County safety policies, procedures, or manuals as required for this position.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Subject to hazards of working at construction sites, in confined spaces, around heavy equipment, and on or near heavily trafficked highways, with frequent exposure to adverse weather conditions.Required to respond to emergencies on a twenty-four (24) hour basis seven days per week (e.g., severe storms, snow removal, etc.)The selected candidate is subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing.PERFORMANCE EXAMINATION:Candidates selected for positions in this class will be given a performance test to determine familiarity with construction and maintenance trades.
