Computational Scientist III

Myriad Genetics, Salt Lake City, Utah, United States, 84116

Overview

The Computational Scientist III at Myriad Genetics builds and maintains the underlying assays and analytical pipelines, working closely with molecular biologists and software engineers. Contributions include validating product updates, developing statistical analysis methods to extract robust signals from noisy experimental data, and sharing methods in the form of simple re-usable software.

Location:

Remote (San Fransisco Bay Area preferred)

Responsibility

Use rigorous data science and modern software best practices to create efficient, reliable, and optimized bioinformatics pipelines.

Build, validate, and future-proof new products and product features that improve the lives of the patients we serve.

Work closely with molecular biologists, software engineers, automation engineers, and data scientists.

Characterize data resulting from novel molecular assays and guide molecular protocol development from a statistical perspective.

Work with legal staff to secure intellectual property rights for inventions pertaining to our products.

Communicate results to stakeholders across the organization, e.g., engineering, marketing, sales, legal, and genetic counseling. Thoroughly and thoughtfully describe systems for both technical and non-technical audiences.

Qualifications

PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, biophysics, physics, statistics, molecular biology, genetics, or related discipline required.

3+ years' experience developing methods to analyze large, noisy real-world data sets (in the context of molecular biology and/or human genetics, preferred).

Experience leading projects that span multiple departments, guiding the team to make critical decisions and securing resources as needed for successful project completion.

Experience developing custom analysis methods, algorithms, and analysis pipelines.

Strong computational skills, preferably with fluency in Python and a workflow definition language (WDL/Snakemake).

Knowledge of software engineering best practices (experience with writing unit-tests, performing code review, version control software, preferred).

Experience working with CLIA-validated assays.

Experience with Illumina Next Generation Sequencing (NGS).

Experience with other sequencing platforms such as IonTorrent, PacBio, Nanopore, preferred.

Experience with modern medical genetics data sets (e.g., 1000 genomes, TCGA, GIAB), preferred.

Working knowledge of nucleic acid chemistry and genetics, preferred.
