This position is a part of the Communications Infrastructure Design & Build (CIBD) in Campus IT Infrastructure.Position SummaryThis position is responsible for the installation of voice and data station cabling (from the TR - Telecommunications Room to the station jack). This is primarily handled via the management of outside contractors but is occasionally performed by the technician. It manages and installs riser copper and fiber optic cabling within buildings (between TR's) in addition to overseeing the build-out of TR's. It is responsible for collecting and ensuring the accuracy of cabling test results for uploading into the campus database. The position is also responsible for the installation, testing and troubleshooting of fiber circuits at the request of Network Engineers and Project Managers in the departmentApplication Review DateThe First Review Date for this job is: 10/29/2024.ResponsibilitiesFiber Circuits:Install, test, troubleshoot and repair fiber circuits throughout campus in support of the voice and data networks.This involves placing fiber jumpers between two to many FIC's (Fiber Interface Cabinets) within buildings or across campus.All connections must be cleaned, labeled, tested and documented.It requires the ability to use sophisticated test equipment - primarily dB loss meters and OTDR's (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer)Contractor Management:Manage outside contractors who perform work on campus for the installation of communications cabling.This may involve all or some of the following: scope of work/bid preparation, job walks, bid award, oversight during construction, punch walks and test result validation and uploading.It also often requires coordinating with IST/Telecom units, such as DPM (Design and Project Management), NOS (Network Operations and Services) and Installation Services.Install Equipment and Cabling:Install, terminate and test copper cabling as necessary, when contractors are unavailable.Other Related Duties:As assigned by Manager and continuous professional development and training.Required QualificationsSignificant experience installing communications cabling; to include both copper and fiber.Ability to use industry standard copper and fiber testers.Ability to read and apply blueprints and standards documents.Ability to independently solve problems and design issues.Strong time management skills.BICSI or private courses related to the theory, installation and testing of copper and fiber optic cable.High School Diploma and/or equivalent experience/training.Preferred QualificationsStrong project management skills.Associates Degree and/or equivalent experience/training.Salary & BenefitsThis is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) non-exempt career position, which is paid hourly and eligible for UC Benefits.For information on the comprehensive benefits package offered by the University, please visit the University of California's Compensation & Benefits website.Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position.
