DESCRIPTION

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:The Mission of the San Diego Supercomputer Center is to translate innovation into practice. SDSC adopts and partners on innovations in industry and academia in the areas of software, hardware, computational and data sciences, and related areas, and translates them into cyberinfrastructure that solves practical problems across any and all scientific domains and societal endeavors. Cyberinfrastructure refers to an accessible, integrated network of high-performance computing, data, and networking resources and expertise, focused on accelerating scientific inquiry and discovery. With more than 250 employees and $30-50M of revenue a year, SDSC is a global leader in the design, development, and operations of cyberinfrastructure.SDSC supports hundreds of multidisciplinary programs spanning a wide variety of domains, from earth sciences and biology to astrophysics, bioinformatics, and health IT. SDSC presently operates multiple large HPC systems ranging from a 120k x86 CPU core general purpose system to a system explicitly designed for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, and a nationally distributed system open for all of academia to integrate with. SDSC offers research data services across the entire vertical stack from universally scalable storage to consulting services on FAIR, Big Data, and AI. SDSC offers a rich set of cloud services both on-premise, in the commercial cloud, and as hybrid services across both.SDSC has three geographic scopes, a national scope supporting cyberinfrastructure for the entire US research and education community, a California scope with a special focus on convergence research that addresses the three dominant threats to CA: Drought, Fire, Earthquakes, and a campus scope focusing on advancing the global impact of SDSC by advancing the research objectives of the UC San Diego faculty, researchers, and students. SDSC impacts researchers at scales from 1,000's to Millions. SDSC annually trains thousands of researchers in cyberinfrastructure tools and software, and supports thousands of individual researchers via Unix accounts on its large HPC systems. We empower our collaborators to achieve breakthrough discoveries by operating scientific platforms and science gateways as a service, and by creating bespoke solutions that can encompass secure cloud enclaves, regulatory data management, and research software development. Embracing a customer-centric and solution-focused approach, the S4 team is dedicated to fostering community building, advancing cyberinfrastructure, accelerating research objectives, and driving societal impact through collaboration and service excellence.POSITION OVERVIEW:Incumbent applies advanced systems infrastructure concepts and campus, medical center or Office of the President or institutional objectives to resolve highly complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Selects methods, techniques and evaluation criteria to obtain results. Gives presentations to associated team and other technical units. Evaluates new technologies including performing moderate to complex cost / benefit analyses. May lead a team of systems / infrastructure professionals.As a technical systems and cloud administration expert for the Sherlock Division, evaluate, design, install, manage, and maintain a large installation of enterprise systems running Windows in support of both productivity and research computing at the San Diego Supercomputer Center and Sherlock Division. Work with critical data systems to lead the effort to deliver a platform for the Sherlock Division, spanning requirements around FISMA, HIPAA, CMMC and CUI-compliant projects and research. The work content includes all aspects of systems management, enterprise networking, cloud deployment and automation, security, compliance and configuration management for building the cyberinfrastructure needed to support the program. Be responsible for making technical recommendations related to computing hardware, network components (switches, routers, firewalls, etc.), operating systems, cloud services, and software architectures.The Systems and Cloud Administrator is a member of the Azure Solutions & Systems team and is primarily responsible for a broad range of activities in support of driving innovation within the core competencies of the division. Provide expert knowledge of public cloud computing platforms include AWS and Azure Government. Responsible for performance by monitoring, maintaining, administering, developing, and testing computing, network, and application components related to large, complex computing platforms used within the Sherlock Division. Work with researchers on strategies, then translate strategies into architectural goals. Confer with the Sherlock Division leadership to achieve consensus on technical architectural direction. Analyze and propose new systems and technologies. Balance workload across multiple Sherlock Division programs/projects. Develop and maintain a disaster recovery plan for systems as well as data recovery plan in the event of a natural disaster. Exhibit technical mastery of enterprise system management, cloud computing, network architecture, operations and security, Windows operating systems, emerging computing technologies and architectures and the interrelationship of all. Provide support to the development of multi-cloud computing infrastructure per the vision of the Sherlock Division.Leverages public cloud platforms to orchestrate the necessary micro-services to provide fit-for-purpose solutions that support big data, analytics and dates science use cases. Works closely with internal and customer teams to create migration and testing plans for their existing applications utilizing standard cloud services that maximize automation and focuses on an infrastructure as code methodology. Explore new technologies and patterns to see how they can be used to improve our code base, and work with teams to vet and implement the new designs and enhancements.QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.

Demonstrated advanced knowledge, skills and abilities associated with system problem identification and resolution. Experience with design, configuration, operation, repair, and tuning of technology systems. Expert ability for objective analysis of complex network and systems architecture in the case of planning and root cause reviews.

BS degree in a technical or scientific discipline such as math or computer science or an equivalent amount of technical engineering or technical programming experience as typically gained within 10 years in lieu of a degree.

Extensive knowledge and technical expertise with the Microsoft Active Directory, Windows computing/network environments and Windows scripting languages.

Extensive experience and understanding of server, storage and networking hardware. Demonstrated ability to install hardware, replace parts, diagnose faults, and work with sales and service personnel. Experience with vendor relations and the evaluation, selection, and purchasing of hardware and software.

Background check required.Pay Transparency ActAnnual Full Pay Range: $104,900 - $198,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)Hourly Equivalent: $50.24 - $95.26Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position.
