Position Title: Controller

Reports To: Director of Finance

Employee Classification: Salaried

Hours: 1.0 Full Time Equivalent (40 hours/week)

Compensation: Pay range $68,959-$84,810 based on experience

About the Position:

APANO is looking for an experienced, well-organized Controller to manage financial accounting across multiple program areas, dozens of funding sources including state and federal funds, and an affiliated 501c4 organization (APANO Action Fund). The Controller will work closely with the Director of Finance to implement effective and responsible financial management, analysis, and projections and lead day-to-day finance operations, including functional responsibility over accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and grants administration. The Controller will work closely with program leaders and staff to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures and explore how the finance function can support program operations.

Our ideal candidate has experience managing fiscal controls and compliance in a non-profit setting, managing government and private grants and contracts, and has proven themselves to be thoughtful, flexible, and creative in supporting programs with a wide variety of unique needs. The Controller reports to the Director of Finance, and will supervise the Accounting & Payroll Manager.

Position Responsibilities:

Finance and Accounting Leadership (75%)

  • Oversees all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets and actual expenditures.
  • Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
  • Oversee semi-monthly payroll processing procedures and policies, and payroll accounting
  • Manage timely monthly, quarterly, and annual closing procedures
  • Assist with audits.
  • Work with finance team to create and implement appropriate organizational financial policies and procedures

Team Leadership (25%)

  • Leverage strengths of the current finance team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training as needed.
  • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.
  • Set individual annual performance goals to Finance Team staff and provide feedback, support, and accountability towards goals. Support staff professional development and learning.

Qualifications:

The Controller will have:

  • At least 5 years of demonstrated experience in non-profit accounting and financial management
  • Experience managing accounting for grants and contracts
  • Strong analytic, organization and problem solving skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including ability to communicate key data and financial information to org leadership and staff
  • Ability to supervise team members and delegate to and support them effectively
  • Demonstrated competency in spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets, including creation and use of pivot tables
  • Experience using a wide variety of software applications, both web-based and offline, and an ability to quickly learn new programs and applications, and teach others how to use them
  • Ability to adapt to a dynamic work environment and prioritize key tasks.
  • Sufficient English proficiency, as this position communicates regularly in written and spoken English
  • Commitment to APANO’s mission, vision, and values, and respect for Asian and Pacific Islander communities
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field, or commensurate experience
  • Ability to pass background check.

Preferred, but not required:

  • Experience with Sage Intaact accounting software
  • Experience with Quickbooks accounting software
  • Experience working with affiliated 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 organizations
  • Experience with both Microsoft Office and Google Workplace applications
  • Experience with Bill.Com or other third party AP processing
