To monitor system and maintain accurate and timely reports of system activities. To monitor progress of patient's status and adjust ECMO system accordingly. To document and report all pertinent information to ECMO coordinator and ECMO physician.Education & ExperienceMust be licensed as RN for eighteen (18) months. Eighteen (18) months of nursing experience in an intensive care preferred.Certifications, Licenses or Registration required: Valid RN license. PALS preferred.Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesECMO training will require advanced critical thinking skills also, teaching ability. Leadership ability, interpersonal skills, verbal communications skills, collaborative skills, the ability to handle flexible scheduling including on-call shifts. Must complete annual safety training. Must have decision making skills. Competency for this job may include animal lab models and competency will be ensured initially and on an ongoing basis.ResponsibilitiesFacilitates safe and orderly operation of extra-corporeal circuit according to ECMO protocol including but not limited to: drawing blood samples, administering medication, fluids and blood products, monitoring and intervening for circuit complications. Maintaining anticoagulation therapy; analyzing activated coagulation time (ACT), blood gas, chemistry panel, HGB/HCT, adjusting the gas and pump flow, monitoring and maintaining dynamic pressures and blood flow of the circuit.Assures complete documentation of ECMO records.Reports pertinent information on patient's status to on coming team.Participates in ECMO related performance improvement and research activities.Forms effective relationships with co-workers, customers and suppliers.Participates and completes initial ECMO training. Maintains competency in the function as an ECMO specialist, maintains ongoing theory and skill level with changes in practice.Provides effective instructions to patients and family members. Communicates in an effective and positive manner with child/family and other members of the health care team.
