The Network and Systems Administrator performs a wide variety of complex technical duties related to the installation and maintenance of the City's computer network systems in support of citywide department operations. Education, Training, Experience, Certifications, Licenses and Registrations Education / higher education: Bachelor's Degree For required college degrees, applicable field(s) of study: Business, network administration, communications technology, computer science, or related discipline. Minimum number of years of directly related experience: Two years of directly related experience in network administration and communications technology. In lieu of a degree, incumbent must possess six years of relevant experience. Driver's License requirement: Infrequent Driver Regular Driver's License Required Endorsements: None Note For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards. Preferred certifications, licenses or registrations: Microsoft Certified Software Engineer, Certified Network Administrator Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in operating a LAN/WAN network environment with multiple locations. Skills: Excellent skills in the installation and maintenance of LAN and WAN environments, both hardware and software. Proven competence in installing/maintaining servers and troubleshooting multiple systems applications. Must be able to type rapidly and accurately enough to successfully produce documents/spreadsheets, communicate via e-mail, or perform data entry as necessary to accomplish the essential functions of the position. Use of technology, equipment and software typically used in the office environment. Abilities: Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Write routine reports and correspondence. Speak effectively before groups of customers or employees. Use math concepts to present data in charts, graphs, and presentations. Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Internal: Works with department supervisors or managers on routine assignments and special projects. Maintains harmonious, courteous, and understanding relationships, while fostering a collaborative teamwork environment. External: Works with equipment vendors to resolve hardware and software problems and presents a courteous and friendly image for the City. Essential Functions The following functions are typical for this position. Installs and maintains citywide networks, test, troubleshoot hardware, software, establish network connections. Configures, installs and maintains network hardware, servers, routers, peripherals, firewalls and a diverse assembly of hardware. Installs, maintains and supports Active Directory infrastructure. Installs, maintains and supports virtual environments. Responsible for network security, maintain appropriate security policies, anti-virus, anti-spyware and malware systems. Integrates network environments; establishment of TCPIP connections, domains and DNS. Assures network systems are properly backed up to preserve file histories, and availability. Assists or leads in design, implementation of networks; work with users to determine levels of security, access, availability and train users on hardware and software features. Provides technical assistance to users and assist in making recommendations to meet identified needs, including network hardware and software solutions. Establishes gateways, communication interfaces between systems. Provides general programming assistance for indicated user requirements. Provides supervision and direction to technician staff in working with department personnel.
