Recognizing its excellence in nursing care, Barnes-Jewish Hospital was the first adult hospital in Missouri to be certified as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.The Neuroscience Progressive Care Unit (PCU) is a 21 bed unit dedicated to the care of patients in need of specialized nursing care at a critical point in their healthcare journey, where they are at high risk for clinical deterioration. Progressive care, with lower nurse patient ratios, allows for frequent assessment, intervention, treatment, and specialized monitoring.The unit cares for pre and postoperative neurosurgical, neuro-medicine, and stroke patients with complex needs using a team approach with nurses, charge nurse, and patient care techs. Bedside, central monitoring, and remote telemetry are standard for all PCU patients. Many resources are available to nurses on this unit, including: Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Manager, Assistant Nurse Managers, and a Nurse Educator. Additionally, this nursing team collaborates with and is supported by a wide array of multidisciplinary providers, physicians, and pharmacists.A specialized orientation is provided to prepare nurses to care for the neuroscience patient as well as training specific to Progressive Care. Ongoing education and professional development is supported and encouraged.Attention to nursing patients with the provision of excellent outcomes is what drives the work on this unit.

Preferred Qualifications

Role PurposeProvides multi-skilled, direct patient care, under the direction and supervision of a registered professional nurse. This job requires completion of a foundational nursing skills course or equivalent (fundamentals, foundations, or adult/peds health).ResponsibilitiesAssists nurse with patient and family education. Documents all patient care activities provided with correct medical terminology. Acts as 1:1 patient safety sitter as necessary.Ensures availability of supplies and equipment to meet each patient's needs.Implements direct patient care under the supervision of the nursing team.Collects clinical data and information on patients and reports abnormal findings to the nurse.Instructs patients in preparations for tests and procedures.Minimum RequirementsEducationEnrolled in an accredited RN programExperienceNo ExperienceSupervisor ExperienceNo ExperiencePreferred RequirementsEducationEnrolled in an accredited BSN program
