GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

Summarize the nature and level of work performed.BWH PathologyAssists the Lab Control Supervisor with the day-to-day operation of Laboratory Control (department responsible for all receipt, processing, and send out of specimens for all users of the Clinical Laboratories). Responsible for interaction with a diverse group of personnel, answering pertinent questions and providing information as requested and according to established policies. These personnel include staff from the various internal laboratories and health care providers from inside and outside the institution who use the BWH Clinical Laboratories.PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.Acts as the primary contact person for all inquiries to the Clinical Laboratories.Responsible for responding appropriately to inquiries on various topics, such as: information on tests, requirements for processing, adding on tests to specimens. Refers caller with laboratory specific inquiries to the appropriate laboratory supervisor as necessary.Ensures the continuous smooth flow of specimens from receipt in the laboratory through processing.Monitors staff arrival and departure times, breaks and courier runs.Re-directs staff as needed.Notifies the Supervisor or Technical Director of issues affecting workflow or when additional assistance is required.Assists Supervisor as needed. Assists with scheduling, orientation, and training.Demonstrates leadership and acts as a role model for staff.Notifies Supervisor of issues affecting scheduling, orientation and training.Assists Supervisor as directed with staff competency testing and yearly merit reviews.Assists with inventory and administrative duties.Troubleshoots all problems independently.Coordinates the investigation of problems; prioritizing them through delegation to senior technicians.Makes certain resolution is reached and communicated back in a timely manner.Notifies Supervisor of all unresolved problems and of significant problems (i.e., where corrective action or change in procedure is indicated).Maintains safety. Practices safe work habits and directs staff as needed. Informs Supervisor of issues involving safety.Ensures the smooth operation of the

Roche 8100 preanalytic analyzer .Performs maintenance as required.Troubleshoots problems, calls for service as needed and reports issues to Supervisor and Technical Director.Trains staff on proper function of modules and monitoring of alarms.Updates computer files for private physician/institutional mailing addresses and contacts. Reviews returned reports and makes correction as needed. Faxes copies of reports as needed.Prepares and processes specimens as needed, including any clinical trials and specimens to be sent out to reference laboratories.Coordinates emergency procedures during computer down time following established procedures.Is responsible to be aware of JC National Patient Safety Goals and to comply with BWH and Laboratory policies and procedures.Performs other duties as required.Qualifications:Graduate of MLA program, Associates in Biology/related science, or equivalent experience preferred.Previous Senior Technician, Lab Control experience preferred. 2 Years experience, specimen processing required.EEO Statement:
