Job Description - Assistant Director, Marketing & Communications (2403806)Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in journalism, communications, advertising, digital media, business, or a related field. Three years of full-time experience in communications, design, marketing, social media, or public relations. Proven ability to write web copy, feature stories, media releases, newsletters, or other promotional content. Experience with content management systems for website creation and management. Proficiency in graphic and digital imaging software (Adobe Creative Suite or similar).Preferred Qualifications:Master’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in marketing, communications, digital media, higher education administration, or a related field. Knowledge of effective graphic design, branding, and marketing principles. Experience in photography and/or video production. Experience managing social media accounts for businesses or organizations.Brief Description of Duties:The Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications is a key member of the Continuing, Professional, and Online Education (CPOE) team at Stony Brook University. This role is responsible for creating and managing content across digital platforms to support CPOE’s offerings, including SBU Online graduate programs, Teacher & Leader Education, Accelerated College Education (ACE), Pre-College Summer, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal and communication skills, a service-oriented approach, and the ability to write diverse content, including campaign materials, feature stories, brochures, and media releases. They will ensure all content aligns with CPOE’s strategic goals and SBU’s brand identity while engaging target audiences across digital platforms such as websites, social media, and email campaigns. The Assistant Director reports to the Communications Director and collaborates with the Director of Marketing and other team members to ensure content optimization and performance across digital channels. This role requires attention to detail, adaptability, and the ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining strong relationships within the university and with external audiences.Duties:Content Creation:
Collaborate with the CPOE MarCom team, program directors, and subject matter experts to develop and update written and visual content for recruitment, advisement, engagement, and outreach.Produce impact stories for websites, campaigns, or news releases by identifying topics, gathering assets, and publishing to appropriate channels.Ensure all content aligns with the University’s brand identity, meets accessibility standards, and maintains consistent messaging and tone.Create or source high-quality images, graphics, or videos to complement content.Implement SEO best practices to increase website visibility and improve engagement.
Website Management:
Partner with stakeholders and the CPOE MarCom team to develop web content that engages, informs, and drives conversions.Create and maintain websites using the provided templates and design snippets available on the University’s content management system (OU/Modern Campus).Manage digital assets and create CPOE templates to ensure design consistency and the efficient creation of new pages.Ensure that web pages are accessible, accurate, up-to-date, and aligned with their intended purpose.Use data analytics to measure the effectiveness of communication strategies and tactics, recommending adjustments as needed.
Media Management:
Work with the Communications Director to develop and implement social media strategies that promote CPOE initiatives, engage key audiences, and support the University’s communications efforts.Monitor and analyze social media performance to identify areas for improvement and growth.
Digital Marketing:
Assist the Director of Marketing in strategizing and developing content for marketing campaigns.Support digital marketing strategies by using analytics and tools like Google Analytics, Tag Manager, Siteimprove, and Conductor.
Work on integrated marketing and communications projects with the Communications Director, the Director of Marketing, and program directors on integrated communications projects supporting all CPOE programs.Foster relationships across the Stony Brook community to explore potential partnerships and advance University goals.Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.Special Notes:This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption. In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly. For this position, we are unable to sponsor candidates for work visas.
