DescriptionThe Gordon Center for Medical Imaging is a multidisciplinary research center dedicated to improving patient care by developing and promoting new biomedical imaging technologies used in both diagnosis and therapy. Our main activities include research, training, and translation of innovative research into clinical applications. Investigators from the academic community, research laboratories, and industry are welcome to use the Center's medical imaging equipment and clinical research facilities available through PET Core. The MGH PET Core is cGMP/FDA registered PET drug manufacturer that operates at cost to provide investigators with required personnel, equipment and services to design and conduct research studies using positron emission tomography. The PET Core is part of the Department of Radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital and is affiliated with Harvard Medical School.Job DescriptionThe Preclinical Research Laboratory Manager will oversee and manage day-to-day operations of the preclinical PET/CT/MRI at the Charlestown Navy Yard, including performing a variety of laboratory procedures, according to prescribed protocols using standard laboratory equipment, recording and checking results for completeness and accuracy, and troubleshooting procedures. The lab manager will also maintain equipment and lab space, oversee resource use and ordering process, and ensure safe and proper use of all equipment.Supervised by the PET Core Directors, the preclinical research lab manager will assist with all routine aspects of the project including animal handling, cell culture, and isotope use. The typical duties are:Manage and keep records of rodents (mice and rats).Animal imaging (PET, CT, MRI) of the rodents, including preparation of animals with injections and image acquisition procedures.Detailed daily record keeping, enabling participation in data analysis, experimental design, and troubleshooting, with an opportunity for authorship in research publications.Maintain records of results and methodologies in a log of work performed.The lab manager is expected to:Participate in lab meetings.Attend seminars of interest, courses, and lectures to further knowledge of research.Conduct literature searches, compile information for journals, and suggest uses for new techniques to the Core Directors.Attend mandatory courses in safety procedures for handling, storage, and disposal of biohazardous, flammable, corrosive, and toxic materials.Carry out all laboratory activities in compliance with applicable regulations and protocols.Assist the Core Business Manager with managing lab-related finances, such as core service quotes and handling purchasing when needed.The preclinical research lab manager will help to keep reagents and devices/accessories up to date and will assist with cleaning and disposal of spent reagents using appropriate procedures. This position involves working with animals and radio-chemicals. Training in safety procedures for handling animals and radioactive materials will be provided. Responsibilities will also include equipment maintenance, supply inventory (ordering and restocking), and disposing of specimens, media, and other materials using appropriate procedures.The work will require a high degree of manual dexterity and organizational skills. The manager will need to work independently, set priorities, communicate effectively, and use initiative to complete diversified responsibilities under the supervision of PET Core Directors. The preclinical research lab manager will be expected to manage research technicians as the PET Core staff grows.QualificationsBS in Chemistry, Biology, or a related discipline.Familiarity with small animal work and laboratory techniques. Additional training in these and other methodologies will be provided.Minimum of 7 years of directly related and progressively more responsible wet lab experience.Minimum of 3 years managing an imaging core in a hospital or university is preferred.Supervisory experience is preferred.EEO StatementMassachusetts General Hospital is an Affirmative Action Employer.
