Basic Function
Under moderate supervision, sets up and operates machines and precision hand tools to cut, shape, and finish ferrous & non-ferrous metals, plastics and other exotic materials for the manufacture, remanufacture, assembly, installation, and repair of vehicle and equipment parts and components.
Examples of Duties
Sets up and operates machine and precision hand tools to fit, manufacture, or repair vehicle parts or mechanisms or other related vehicle components, such as transmissions, pumps, differentials, compressors, blowersDisassembles, repairs, and reassembles components and equipment to ensure adherence to precision alignment and close tolerance requirementsOperates lathe for turning, shaping, and finishing shafts, axles, pins, pulleys, and gear for forming flat end surfaces, collars, shoulders, and cylindrical surfaces; cutting screw threads; and drilling, reaming, tapping, and bruling a variety of work piecesOperates milling machines to produce, flat, curved, and irregular surfaces for slots, grooves, keyways, dovetails, spines, flutes, cams, and gearsCleans parts, before and after machining, to remove grease, rust stains, and other foreign mattersWorks from blueprints, sketches, engineering drawings, damaged parts, or description of parts to be replaced to determine dimensions and tolerances of parts to be manufactured, sequence of operations, and tools, materials, and machines requiredVerifies dimensions of finished products, using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators, to ensure adherence to specificationsUtilizes Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software to operate Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machinesContributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried outMinimum Qualifications
Four years' journey-level experience performing machinist work in the following areas: manufacture, assembly, installation, and repair of vehicle and equipment parts, special tooling, jigs, and fixtures; operation of vertical mill, horizontoal mill and lathe; drilling, milling, turning and grinding ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics and other exotic materials for manufacturing and remanufacturing; and operation of a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) mill and lathe ORCompletion of a 4 year machinist apprenticeship program from a recognized union which includes training in all of the abovementioned areasValid California Class C driver's licenseEssential Knowledge
