The City of Murphy's Parks & Recreation Department seeks to add a Recreation Programmer position to its' dynamic team! Under general direction of the Recreation Superintendent, this position plans, creates and provides quality activities and community events to citizens. Assists in the administration of activities and programs and plans community events that enrich the lives of the participants including but not limited to seniors, youth and adults, all while modeling our core values of being Murphy C.O.O.L.

Schedule CommitmentRegular attendance is essential for this position. The Recreation Programmer works a 40 hour per week schedule with standard work hours ofMonday-Friday 8am-4:30pm (30 minute lunch). Must be willing to work evenings and weekends occasionally to manage special events/evening classes.

Pay PlanThis opportunity is exempt and budgeted on Pay Grade #28.
The pay plan range below is shown to represent opportunities for growth and development within this opportunity. We are seeking to hire between the Min to Mid range of the pay grade shown dependent upon qualifications.
Min $48,278.16 per year
Mid $57,933.80 per year
Max $67,589.43 per year

Examples of Duties

WORK PERFORMED
  • Coordinates recreational activities by retaining instructors, setting up schedules, providing accounting services, including payment of instructors, monitoring attendance for activities, answering questions and concerns related to activities, organizing registrations and developing and implementing activities.
  • Assists in maintaining class and reservation schedules at each facility to ensure that recreation staff are aware of the most up to date classroom and facility reservation schedule.
  • Assists with informing the community of recreational opportunities through advertising and promotions. Markets and promotes programs through recreation publications, newsletters, flyers and other media.
  • Develops implements and maintains a comprehensive programming and community event strategy targeting appropriate audiences.
  • Coordinates recreational activities, classes and various community needs with local vendors, businesses and schools to partner and initiate new and distinct programs.
  • Maintains and recommends programming and class supply/equipment needs.
  • Responsible for the administration of instructors, classes and programs.
  • Conducts research on various topics as needed to enhance programs and recreation classes.
  • Informs Recreation Superintendent of all work-related activities. Evaluates programs and classes to make changes if necessary. Makes recommendations for the addition of new programs and classes or the discontinuation of unsuccessful programs or classes.
  • Initiates, coordinates, implements and organizes city-sponsored activities and programs.
  • Assists with all Center reservations as needed. Helps with reservation set up and tear down as needed.
  • Plan and execute Recreation events throughout the year including but not limited to the Daddy Daughter Dance, Family Field Day, etc.
  • In conjunction with the Public Affairs Officer, plans and oversees the design and creation of a biannual activities and events guide twice a year that includes all recreation info and programs as well as general city information.
  • Plans and oversees volunteer management for programs and events.
  • Negotiates and coordinates event and instructor contracts with vendors; solicits sponsors for special or new programs; obtains required license agreements and permits for each event or program; ensures compliance with applicable standards.
  • Reviews, issues and maintains instructor contracts twice annually for each specific instructor as well as each class offered.
  • Solicit and submits invoices from 3rd party instructors on a monthly basis to ensure timely instructor payment and keeps record of all program payments received and invoices submitted.
  • Conducts instructor interviews, ongoing training and communication as well as hiring or ending contracts by the proper means necessary.
  • Adheres to the charter, personnel, safety, and divisional policies and procedures of the City.
  • Monitors classes for quality and safety and assists in the implementation of safety policies and procedures for instructors and participants.
  • Assists other departments with respective events.
  • Assists with recreation department with daily duties, and special events by providing various forms of administrative service by monitoring equipment safety, maintaining cleanliness of facility, supervising patrons, providing first aid as needed, assisting in membership and class sales, maintaining records, providing some accounting assistance related to the budget and coordinating facility rentals.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in recreation, physical education or related field.
  • One (1) year of recreation programming experience or related field.
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess Adult and infant CPR and First Aid Certification or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Valid State of Texas class C driver's license.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • May be required to pass a drug screen and/or pre?employment job performance assessment
  • Must be able to perform physical activities to include kneeling, bending, twisting, dragging, pushing, pulling and lifting up to 50 pounds of various recreational and athletic equipment

2024-2025 Full Time Employee Benefits Summary
  • Retirement benefits provided through the Texas Municipal Retirement System. Mandatory contributions via payroll deduction - employee contributes 7% and the City matches 2 - 1.
  • Term Life Insurance plan of 1x salary (upto $100,000) paid for by the City of Murphy. Supplemental coverage is available for purchase by the employee.

City has 2 medical plans (HDHP and PPO) and the city pays upto 100% of the premium for employees and provides upto 50% premium contribution for qualified dependents. Medical plan is with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Dental plan is with Ameritas, and Vision plan is with VSP. Benefits are deducted pre-tax, see table below for rates.
  • Telemedicine (including a behavioral health component) and Pet telemedicine fully funded by the City of Murphy
