Job Summary:

The Department of English and Applied Linguistics at Hawai’i Pacific University invites applications for a full-time position at the rank of lecturer, specialty in Applied Linguistics. The successful candidate will teach classes in the undergraduate and graduate TESOL programs as well as serve as TESOL practica coordinator and as Director of the International Groups Program.

This is a full-time position with a 30-credit workload required over the academic year and includes summer duties. Approximately 12 credits of the workload of the successful applicant will be International Groups Program Director, which involves curriculum design, program administration, program development, and teaching in the program. As International Groups Program Coordinator, the successful applicant will also cultivate and coordinate relationships with international universities and organizations and develop programs to support English language learning of international groups at HPU. The remaining assigned workload of 18 credits will be teaching in the TESOL program. Within the TESOL Program, the successful applicant will teach graduate and undergraduate courses and serve as the TESOL Practica Coordinator, which involves teaching the practica courses, developing and maintaining student-teaching sites, placing students in practicum sites, observing student teaching and coordinating the associated administrative work.

As a faculty member, the successful candidate is required to maintain competence in the academic field by remaining current in their own and related disciplines and in the most effective instructional methods. The successful candidate will demonstrate effectiveness in the synthesis, interpretation, and communication of new knowledge as a teacher-scholar.

In addition to instructional and scholarly activity, the successful candidate will participate in commencement, convocations and other university-wide events, and department and collegiate meetings in the week before the start of academic terms. Faculty presence and engagement is expected during academic terms in which faculty have teaching responsibilities.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Earned masters degree from an accredited college or university in applied linguistics, TESOL or a closely related field by December 31, 2024.

Demonstrated expertise in contemporary teaching methods and approaches in TESOL.

Experience coordinating practicum experiences, internships, or experiential activities in a teacher education program, or equivalent.

Competency in at least one language other than English.

Residency on Oahu at the time of employment.

Desired Qualifications:

Earned doctoral masters degree from an accredited college or university in applied linguistics, TESOL or a closely related field by August 15, 2024.

Five years’ cumulative experience of language teaching in domestic or international settings.

Familiarity with public, private, and for-profit ESOL institutions.

Experience teaching, coordinating, or developing an international group program, or equivalent.

Demonstrated knowledge of and/or experience in teaching in a diverse setting.

Active research agenda and regular participation in professional development, including conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications.

Demonstrated teaching excellence (strong teaching evaluations and classroom materials including well-designed syllabi) in one or more of the following: language teaching methodologies, language teaching practica, curriculum design, teaching English to young learners and youth, K-12 teacher education, or languages and cultures of the Pacific.

Demonstrated scholarly record or evidence of a promising teacher-scholar agenda in one or more of the following: teacher education, practicum experience, experiential learning, language teaching methodologies, second language acquisition, languages and cultures of the Pacific.

Five years’ cumulative experience of language teaching in domestic and international settings.

Familiarity with public, private, and for-profit ESOL institutions in Hawaii and abroad.

Experience in language teacher education including classroom teaching, mentoring, and career development advising.

Program administration experience, especially international group program design and coordination.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, staff, and faculty from diverse ethnic, cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Demonstrated knowledge of various settings of teaching English to speakers of other languages among various student populations.

Demonstrated facility with online and hybrid teaching modalities.

Other Qualifications:Candidates must

Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:

1. Teaching (50-60%)

Teach at least 24 credits of undergraduate and graduate courses in one or more academic subjects in area of discipline within a prescribed curriculum.

Develop a syllabus of course activities that meet the requirements of the course description or program chair, establish appropriate student learning outcomes, and provide for appropriate class activities throughout the semester.

Plan and deliver individual classes that conform to the syllabus and other requirements of the University.

Demonstrate a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively in the context of an integrated education.

Maintain accurate and complete records on student participation and performance, use appropriate measures and evaluate student performance on the basis of established student learning outcomes, provide timely feedback to students and assign grades that are an accurate and fair evaluation of student work.

Submit grades and any other required documentation in a timely manner.

Administer student evaluations of faculty at the end of each course, review evaluation summaries and meet with department chair and dean to review.

Post and maintain regular office hours at times reasonably convenient to students.

Serve as an advisor to students to assist them in understanding the curriculum, especially within the major, and mentor them as they plan their degree programs and careers.

In additional to formal course loads, bear a fair share of the faculty responsibility for supervising student research, professional internships, and independent study.

Faculty not assigned to College of Professional Services (CPS) may be required to teach up to two courses per academic year on a Military Program campus, but no more than one per semester.

Administration (20-30%)

Coordinate the TESOL Practica experience, develop and maintain relationships with practicum sites, place students in student-teaching sites, supervise student teaching, evaluate practicum sites and experiences, and coordinate other associated administrative work.

Coordinate the International Groups Programs, maintain and cultivate relationships with international schools, universities and other organizations to facilitate English language short course training at HPU, design short course curriculum, administer program (including classroom and out of classroom experiences).

University Service (10-20%)

Perform related duties such as and acting as advisor to student organizations.

Serve on faculty, college, and/or university committees.

Attend program/department, college, and university meetings.

Assist in the recruitment of new students.

Colleges will further determine and articulate specific expectations for university service.

4.

Performing other related duties as appropriate (5%)

Actively participating as an effective member of team by completing assigned duties, accepting additional assignments or reassignments.
