Management Solutions is seeking a
Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) Subject Matter Expert . This position will work closely with the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) which is a multi-technology office responsible for overseeing more than $27B of investment in large scale demonstrations in emerging technologies such as clean hydrogen, carbon capture, advanced nuclear reactors, grid-scale energy storage, industrial emissions reductions as well as demonstrations in rural and socioeconomically disadvantaged regions.
This opportunity is a part-time consulting 1099 position.
This position is remote, with the expectation that candidates can work during Eastern Time Zone office hours and must physically work in the United States (U.S.). Residency in the U.S. and U.S. citizenship are mandatory requirements.
What you will do…Conduct independent engineering / due diligence technical advisory reviews of long duration energy storage systems (LDES) and related infrastructure supporting clean energy projects.
Able to evaluate the expected or actual functionality and performance of battery energy storage systems (BESS) and related infrastructure.Identify key gaps / needs as it relates to the functionality and performance of LDES and BESS and related infrastructures.Identify project risks and risks mitigants of LDES and BESS and related infrastructures.Articulate recommendations for improvement (when necessary).
Work in teams and independently to provide engineering expertise on various electrical systems and infrastructures.Draft independent engineering / due diligence reports on evaluated electrical systems and infrastructures.Able to draft a data table and risk table (as part of an independent engineering / due diligence report or otherwise).Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication – communicating succinctly and clearly.Liaise with a variety of stakeholders when providing engineering expertise (e.g., clients, technology and design providers, other engineering disciplines).Conduct independent engineering / due diligence reports on electrical systems and infrastructures.Able to evaluate the expected or actual technology and its associated electrical systems and infrastructure.Identify key gaps / needs as it relates to electrical systems and infrastructure.Articulate recommendations / remediation efforts required to address gaps / needs (when necessary).Participates in planning discussions through early phase subject matter and program planning and provides advisement on negotiation clauses/requirements.Prov
ides summaries on recommendations, research, and findings as required for reports and presentations.Par
ticipates in potential awardee discussions, recommendations of down-select criteria to implement, pilot scale or other tracking metrics to ensure continued advancement of performance, discussions with selected projects, and potential knowledge transfer.Provides recommendations on paths forward on key negotiations issues such as program income, data sharing and reporting, pain points, and other key topics as they evolve. Collected recommendations may be requested in the form of discussions, reports, or written correspondence as needed for project success.Provide discussion advisement on documentation provided by award recipient that includes engineering justification demonstrating planned performance of LDES system, conceptual layout, electrical design, equipment specifications and cost. Provide the discussions via written summaries, presentations, reports, white papers, or other document styles as requested.Provides technical advice through phases 1 and 2 management and provides targeted insights into LDES and BESS technologies and their deployment.Utilize specialized technical knowledge to advise client on technical questions associated with phases 1 and 2 baseline evaluations and award negotiations strategies for phase 3 to ensure adequate management approaches.Strong communication skills are critical for this position with government business knowledge to appropriately coordinate responses internally and externally. Participate in site visits including data review as required/requested.
Qualifications:This position is remote with the expectation that candidates can work during Eastern Time Zone office hours and must physically work in the U.S. Residency in the U.S. and U.S. citizenship are mandatory requirements.Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related engineering required. Advanced engineering degrees are a plus.Background and substantial experience in LDES and BESS are required. Background in electrical supply and distribution systems, including low-voltage, medium-voltage, and high-voltage inside-the-fence supply and distribution systems are a plus.Ability to read and comprehend one-line diagrams is mandatory.Ability to read and comprehend electrical systems and equipment specifications and test reports is mandatory.Ability to review related contracts, such as engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contracts, equipment supply agreements, interconnection agreements, utility and RTO/ISO interconnection applications and related queue documentation, and power purchase agreements is a plus.Ability to review instrumentation and controls (I&C), digital central control systems, process controls, and SCADA systems is a plus.Experience providing independent engineering, technical advisory, or due diligence.Minimum of 10 years’ experience practicing in this field, preferably as an engineer-of-record.A licensed professional engineer (P.E.) is preferred.Ability to manage projects isa plus.
