Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Facilities Division has an opening for a Structural Engineer to join our team.What You Will Do (Level 3):Structural Design and EngineeringConduct structural analysis and design for new constructions, renovations, and upgrades, ensuring compliance with relevant codes for buildings, laboratories, and utility structures.Inspect and evaluate the structural integrity of existing structures.Engage in Integrated Project Team (IPT) meetings to provide structural expertise and contribute to project discussions.Prepare and review engineering reports, calculations, specifications, and drawings, ensuring adherence to LBNL’s safety, sustainability, and quality standards as well as local and national codes.Support construction phases by reviewing submittals, responding to RFIs, and conducting site visits to verify compliance with plans.Tackle complex structural challenges with innovative solutions, conducting risk assessments and design reviews for reliability and safety.Integrate sustainable practices and resilient design in all projects to align with LBNL’s sustainability goals.Stay updated on advancements in structural engineering and pursue professional development to enhance technical skills.Additional Duties and Responsibilities (Level 4):Mentor junior engineers on best practices, design standards, and code compliance.Lead structural design projects to ensure timely completion and quality standards while managing specifications to enhance efficiency and consistency.Develop and maintain LBNL’s structural design standards, master specifications, and standard details.Perform special assignments such as preparing presentations and studies for senior management.Assume ownership of select LBNL structural infrastructure, and ensure safety, maintenance, and strategic planning for the timely renewal of these systems.What is Required (Level 3):A 4-year degree from an accredited institution in a related engineering discipline (e.g. civil, structural, or architectural engineering) and a minimum of 5 years of structural design experience in California (or equivalent 9 years of combined education and training).Proven experience in preparing detailed construction drawings and engineering calculations for structural systems and seismic anchorage of components.Strong knowledge of structural engineering principles, materials, and methods for structural and cold formed steel, concrete, masonry, wood, and non-structural systems & components.Expertise in seismic design and in applicable codes, regulations and standards (i.e., CBC, ASCE 7, ACI 318, and ASCE 41).Proficiency in the use of structural design and engineering software such as Bluebeam, AutoCAD, SAP2000, RISA 3D, and Enercalc.Ability to present technical concepts clearly and effectively to project teams and stakeholders.Ability to address complex structural engineering challenges with creative and innovative solutions, incorporating sustainable design practices and principles of resilience.Strong analytical skills and attention to detail in design, documentation, and safety, with a focus on balancing safety, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness in design decisions.Experience applying innovative solutions that prioritize long-term sustainability and resilience in structural engineering projects.Additional Required Education Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Level 4):A 4-year degree from an accredited institution in a related engineering discipline (e.g. civil, structural or architectural engineering) and a minimum of 8 years of structural design experience in California (or equivalent 12 years of combined education and training).California-licensed professional civil engineer (PE) or ability to transfer licensure from another state within 1 year.Proven experience guiding and overseeing the production of detailed designs, ensuring accuracy, compliance with codes, and alignment with project goals.Ability to supervise and be responsible for the development of structural engineering designs, calculations and drawings.Desired Qualifications:Advanced degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.Experience in research facilities or large institutional projects.Experience in the design and construction of seismic bracing for non-structural systems and components.California-licensed professional civil engineer (PE) or ability to transfer licensure from another state within 1 year.California-licensed professional structural engineer (SE) or ability to transfer licensure from another state within 1 year.Experience in managing a team of engineers.Notes:This is a full-time, career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.The Structural Engineer 3 is expected to pay $150,000 - $168,000 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $115,800 - $195,384 annually for the job classification of G22.3.The Structural Engineer 4 is expected to pay $174,000 - $183,000 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $138,984 - $234,528 annually for the job classification of G22.4.This position may be subject to a background check.
