About the OpportunityThe Chair of the Department of Pharmacy and Health Systems Sciences (DPHSS) will collaboratively provide academic leadership and strategy for all teaching, service (university, professional, and clinical), research, and professional development activities within the department in alignment with the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (SOPPS), Bouvé College of Health Sciences (BCHS) and Northeastern University. As a full-time faculty member, the Chair will represent, lead and advocate for the department for it to thrive within Northeastern’s global university system and beyond. Northeastern University continues a path of rapid and transformative growth that requires the Chair to navigate market opportunities, interdisciplinary opportunities, accrediting bodies, health system and industry partners, professional organizations, alumni and all other key stakeholders that will contribute to the department’s success. The Chair will collaborate with colleagues across the college and university’s global network to identify and develop new teaching and research opportunities. The Chair will report to the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Dean to advance the mission and strategic plan of the department, school, college and collectively contribute to the University’s Academic Plan mission and goals.The Chair will be responsible for setting academic and research priorities; maintaining standards of academic and pedagogical excellence; students success; advancing experiential lifelong learning opportunities locally and globally; attracting, developing, and retaining exemplary faculty and staff; collaborating with employers and partners; overseeing all administrative aspects of the department, including budgetary oversight, while maintaining a fiscally-sound strategic environment; engaging in entrepreneurship and development activities; and contributing to the growth and innovation of the department by leveraging the success of the school, college, and global university system.About Bouvé College of Health Sciences, SOPPS, and DPHSSThe Bouvé College of Health Sciences has over 280 faculty members, with approximately 2,000 undergraduate and 2,400 graduate students. We are dedicated to excellence in pharmacy-related education, research, and service including the delivery of patient care in partner health systems. We prepare students with the knowledge, skills, and values for careers in pharmacy practice and the pharmaceutical sciences. Our programs contribute to improved individual and population health through the generation and dissemination of new knowledge, scholarship and community service.The Department of Pharmacy and Health Systems Sciences (DPHSS) is one of two departments in the SOPPS and supports the Doctor of Pharmacy program, as well as various graduate programs within Bouvé and across the university. A diverse group of 27 faculty and staff make up the department, including clinical pharmacists who practice in hospitals, ambulatory care clinics and community pharmacies, clinical scientists as well as federally funded faculty, who conduct research in both laboratory and patient care/community settings, and social and administrative scientists who research a variety of aspects of medication use and health care delivery.ResponsibilitiesBroadly speaking, the responsibilities of the Chair include:Collaborate with unit’s faculty to achieve departmental excellence in all facets of research, scholarship, teaching, and service.Collaborate with unit’s faculty to provide oversight of the development and delivery of the high-quality academic programs offered by the department.Ensure that faculty and staff have the mentoring and support necessary for their success.Engage faculty in strategic planning to ensure the department’s intellectual, scholarly, and academic priorities are aligned with the strategic plans of both the college and university.Collaborate with unit’s faculty to ensure the development and implementation of unit’s governance procedures, including departmental faculty approved committee structure and other service roles.Assign faculty and staff work in accordance with institutional policies.Evaluate faculty and staff performance, in compliance with the university policies and faculty handbook.Recommend faculty and staff hiring/appointments, reappointment, promotion/tenure, and compensation after consultation with the faculty, according to unit’s faculty-approved procedures.Leverage entrepreneurial skills to collaborate with the global campus network, local health systems and the extensive local clinical and pharmaceutical industry to expand educational offerings and develop new teaching and research partnerships.Collaborate with the SOPPS Dean to ensure that applicable regional and programmatic accreditation standards are achieved, with input and in collaboration with the faculty.Collaborate with SOPPS and Bouvé college leadership, including Associate Deans, Assistant Deans, School Leaders, Department Chairs, to advance the mission of the college and university.Provide oversight and responsible stewardship of departmental resources, including staff and budget.Foster a culture of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accountability.Teach in their area of expertise. The typical teaching expectation for the Chair is one course (or equivalent teaching workload) per year.Ensure that applicable regional and programmatic accreditation standards are achieved, with input and in collaboration with the faculty; assist the university in meeting NECHE standards.Collaborate with Associate Dean for Research & Innovation to expand research.
QualificationsA terminal doctoral degree in Pharmacy or a closely related field (PhD or equivalent) from an accredited institution by the appointment start date, and a track record of research and scholarship, teaching, and service which would merit an appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor (tenured or non-tenure track).At least 2 years of experience in an academic leadership role (e.g., program director, chair, center director, assistant dean) with demonstrated success would be an asset.
