The Central Transportation Planning Staff of the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization seeks a Manager of the Multimodal Planning and Design team. The Manager of Multimodal Planning and Design will report to the Director of Projects and Partnerships and will manage a team of transportation planners charged with advancing both regional and community multimodal projects focused on building a safe, sustainable, and accessible regional multimodal transportation system. This team explores and develops strategies to mitigate the challenges that hinder residents from accessing opportunities through our transportation system, with an emphasis on enabling non-auto modes such as walking, rolling, biking, and transit. As a metropolitan planning organization (MPO), the agency also strives for all of its work to support reversing the harm that decades of highway building has brought to regions and, especially, to vulnerable populations. This position offers an opportunity to help shape a growing team, and to engage in regionally significant projects that improve accessibility, safety, multimodal connections, and economic development throughout the Boston metropolitan region.Responsibilities will include the following:

Supervise and mentor a team of transportation planners and program managersLead the advancement of the multimodal planning and design practice area with a focus on a Complete Streets frameworkManage the federally funded Multimodal Mobility Infrastructure Program to address gaps and barriers in both regional and community transportation needsContribute to the development of the

A master’s degree in transportation, urban planning, engineering, business, or a related field, plus at least two years relevant experience; or a bachelor’s degree in the fields listed above, plus five years of relevant experienceStrong multimodal transportation planning experience and familiarity with the Complete Streets frameworkKnowledge of how transportation systems interact with land use, housing, and climate resilienceProven ability to manage projects and peopleStrong stakeholder engagement skills, including the ability to present to a variety of audiences including the MPO board, elected officials, technical staff, and the publicAbility to work collaboratively, manage concurrent streams of work, meet deadlines, and delegate tasksStrong organizational and analytical skills (both qualitative and quantitative)Excellent writing and verbal communication skillsCommitment to diversity, equity, and inclusionProficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google SuitePreferred

Familiarity with one or more traffic analysis programs (e.g., Synchro, VISSIM, or HCS)Understanding of engineering principles and the systems engineering processPrior experience working at an MPO and knowledge of the processes and practices of MPOsFamiliarity with the Boston metropolitan region and its transportation systemsExperience working with Asana or other related project management softwareProficiency with Deltek Vision or other resource planning softwareThis is a full-time position and the starting salary range is $95,000-115,000 annually, contingent upon qualifications and experience. Additional InformationThe Central Transportation Planning Staff of the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization is a public agency made up of a passionate group of transportation planners, analysts, modelers, programmers, and engineers working to address the Boston region’s transportation challenges. The agency’s deep transportation knowledge is an essential asset to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), regional transit authorities, cities and towns within the region, as well as other agencies and stakeholders.

The agency has a hybrid schedule, combining time in the office with remote work. Employees must reside within a commutable distance from the Central Transportation Planning Staff’s office, which is located in downtown Boston, in a transit-oriented and bicycle-friendly area.

Candidates must have legal authorization to work in the United States and a valid driver’s license and/or the ability to arrange transportation to meetings in different parts of the region.
