The Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI) is Stanford University's interdisciplinary research and teaching institute on international policy and international affairs. FSI is home to more than fifty faculty scholars and hundreds of other researchers and students—undergraduates, graduate and post-doctoral—who share an academic interest in international policy questions and challenges. FSI sponsors research and teaching programs, convenes conferences and seminars and hosts lectures by leading scholars and policymakers to advance understanding of the most pressing international policy challenges facing the world today. Reporting to the Deputy Director of FSI, the Associate Director for Academic Affairs and Human Resources draws on expertise in planning, operations, and Stanford policies and procedures to administer the institute’s daily HR administrative work in faculty, staff, postdoc, student employment, and visitor affairs. Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to managing the HR processes for recruiting and hiring, performance management, salary setting, supplemental pay, leaves, and visiting scholar appointments.The Associate Director for Academic Affairs and Human Resources will play a leadership role, managing an administrative team of 2.0 FTE and working closely with administrators throughout FSI’s centers and programs. This position will simplify institute processes and procedures and identify gaps in training among administrative staff to better facilitate compliance and make it easier for FSI to achieve its research, teaching, and policy impact goals. In doing so, this position will partner with FSI leadership, the Dean of Research office, and other Stanford central offices.This is a 100% FTE position. All final candidates must successfully complete a background check.In this role, you will:Lead the planning and operations for programs or functions that have significant business, regulatory and/or technical challenges requiring subject matter expertise.Evaluate programs or functions, policies and procedures. Identify issues and develop alternative solutions which may include changes to programs, policies and procedures.Review and analyze trends to advise and develop recommendations to achieve or modify the goals of the program or function.Represent the program or function within the department, unit or school by committing resources and providing information and/or training. Represent the program or function at the university level and/or to external/internal stakeholders and constituencies.Manage and contribute to the development of outreach strategies that may include relationship development, communications and compliance.May develop and/or oversee budgets; manage finances including monitoring, analyzing, forecasting, and reporting.Serve as first approver on academic staff, visiting scholar, and visiting faculty appointments in the Faculty and Academic Staff Appointment (FASA) system.Originate and complete HR-related paperwork and online transactions and forms for and track future action items related to new faculty appointments, annual administrative supplemental payments for faculty directorships, emeritus faculty recall appointments, faculty sabbatical leaves, faculty retirement, and other teaching staff, including lecturers.Assess training needs and may develop associated training.May direct and/or supervise staff.To be successful in this role, you will bring:Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.Demonstrated ability to establish priorities, manage shifting priorities, and handle numerous time-sensitive projects with multiple deadlines.Ability to accomplish goals working through formal and informal channels, with diplomacy and tactfulness.Demonstrated creativity, problem solving, critical analysis, initiative, judgment and, decision-making skills.Demonstrated ability to develop and meet budget goals.Demonstrated solid planning and organizational skills.Demonstrated attention to detail.Demonstrated experience working independently and as part of a team.Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.Strong relevant subject matter knowledge.Ability to direct the work of others, for jobs requiring supervision.Ability to leverage resources (e.g., policies, websites, and campus contacts) for analysis and making decisions.In addition, preferred requirements include:Interest in international policy and international affairs.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.Occasionally use a telephone.Rarely lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.WORK STANDARDS:Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrates the ability to work well with Stanford colleagues and clients and with external organizations.Promote Culture of Safety: Demonstrates commitment to personal responsibility and value for safety; communicates safety concerns; uses and promotes safe behaviors based on training and lessons learned.Subject to and expected to comply with all applicable University policies and procedures, including but not limited to the personnel policies and other policies found in the University’s Administrative Guide,
