What You Will Be Doing:
Strategic HR Leadership : You will lead the development and execution of HR strategies that support the College’s mission and long-term vision. This involves collaborating with the College President and other senior leaders to implement programs that foster a supportive and inclusive work culture. You will also provide visionary leadership in talent management, workforce planning, and organizational development, ensuring that HR practices align with the College’s commitment to diversity, equity, and student success.
Talent Acquisition and Development : Oversee the recruitment process to attract highly skilled and diverse candidates for administrative, faculty, and staff roles. You will refine the onboarding program to integrate new employees into the College community and develop talent development programs, including succession planning. You will ensure that employee onboarding and offboarding processes are seamless, engaging, and reflective of the College’s values.
Employee Relations and Performance Management : Establish strategies to maintain a positive work environment, promote open communication, and resolve conflicts effectively. You will manage employee relations issues, lead investigations, and ensure compliance with federal and Michigan employment laws. Develop and oversee a performance appraisal system that encourages employee growth, tracks progress, and addresses areas for improvement, providing coaching and support to supervisory staff.
Compensation and Benefits Administration : Manage and update compensation plans to ensure competitive and equitable pay structures across the College. You will handle all aspects of benefits administration, including enrollment, claims processing, and customer service, and develop programs to encourage employee health and wellness.
Learning and Development : Collaborate with academic departments to identify professional development needs and implement training programs. You will develop an annual training plan to enhance skills and promote career growth, as well as lead initiatives to expand leadership capabilities within the College through programs like the College Leadership Academy.
Inclusive Excellence Initiatives : Promote initiatives to enhance diversity recruitment and retention, ensuring that the College remains a welcoming environment for all identities. You will oversee the College’s diversity and inclusion programs and serve as the Equal Employment Opportunity Compliance Officer, ensuring compliance with non-discrimination laws.
Labor Relations and Negotiations : Serve as the lead negotiator for collective bargaining matters, handling union grievances, and fostering positive faculty, staff, and labor relations. This includes participating in the negotiation and implementation of labor agreements and maintaining records for compliance.
HR Technology and Data Analytics : Utilize HR technology and data analytics to drive informed decision-making and improve HR processes. You will ensure data privacy and compliance in coordination with the IT department.
Budget Management and Compliance : Develop and manage the HR department’s budget, ensuring resources are allocated efficiently. Stay updated on legal requirements and prepare reports for regulatory agencies, ensuring adherence to federal, state, and College policies.
Experience You Will Need:
Education and Experience : A Master’s degree in a related field (e.g., Human Resources Management, Business Administration) and at least five years of progressively responsible experience in HR or a related area are required. Experience in labor relations, union negotiations, and developing HR policies is preferred.
HR Certifications : Professional certifications such as SHRM-SCP or SPHR are highly desirable. If not certified, there should be a willingness to pursue certification.
Skills and Abilities : Demonstrated leadership skills with a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. You should possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to work effectively across all levels of the organization. Analytical skills and experience with HRIS or other HR-related software are also essential.
Experience in Education : Working in a higher education or community college setting is preferred, with the ability to understand and navigate the unique needs of an academic institution.
Cultural Competency : Ability to work in a diverse environment with individuals from various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds is essential for this role.
