Summary See below for important information regarding this job. Responsibilities Performs a variety of tasks involved in packing and repacking non-hazardous and/or hazardous materials and items. Selects proper container and methods of packing, cushioning and follows specialized packing procedures. Examines any prepackaged items to determine whether any repacking or over-packing is required, consolidates shipments; and applies certification, identification and shipping data. Applies a wide variety of packing methods and techniques including blocking and bracing based on the search and application of regulations covering the packing and transporting of hazardous materials. May pack, preserve, or re-pack material or items where techniques and procedures are standard and/or require little deviation from established methods. May perform receiving, storing, shipment, and distribution of a variety of bin supplies, materials, equipment, and commodities using material handling equipment to include fork lift, stock selectors, etc. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications To qualify for a Packer, your qualifications must include: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort The work requires standing on hard surfaces for extended periods of time and bending, stooping, reaching, and twisting in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries items and packed containers weighing up to 40 pounds; may lift greater weights with assistance from others or using lifting devices. Moderate to heavy pulling is required to apply nets to completed air pallets to insure tightness and prevent movement of material. Moderate physical effort is used in operating hand and foot controls when operating materials handling equipment, to include a forklift capable of lifting 20,000 pounds. Working Conditions Works inside and outside and is subject to heat, cold, damp, drafty, or poorly lighted areas. May work outside in all kinds of weather and is frequently exposed to dirty, dusty, and greasy conditions. Exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, and bruises. Exposed to injury from mechanical equipment. Subject to injury from falling objects, collisions, shifting loads, etc. Must wear safety shoes at all times and, when required, gloves, safety goggles and other protective clothing, as necessary.
