Reporting to the unit managers, the Computed Tomography (CT) Technologist prepares and operates equipment to acquire diagnostic images. The technologist is responsible for performing patient care, documenting exams in the Electronic Health Record (EHR), and ensuring images are archived in PACS. Must keep abreast of all new policies and procedures within the department. Staff may be required to float among CT clinics and divisions as needed. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Prepares CT equipment by conducting warm-up, calibration, and quality control procedures on any equipment used during the workday according to operating procedures and manufacturer's guidelines to ensure safe operation. Identifies and reports equipment malfunctions to the appropriate personnel. Prepares the exam room by ensuring supplies are available for patient care. Ensures supplemental emergency equipment (code carts, contrast emergency kits) are available and confirms locks are intact and documented daily. Confirms CT orders are correct, the exam has been protocoled within department guidelines, and consults with Radiologists for any outstanding questions or concerns regarding an exam. Per hospital and departmental contrast administration policies and procedures, performs venipuncture and Point of Care (POC) testing for purposes of contrast administration under the direction of a radiologist. Coordinates all patient exams with orders, patient screening forms, EHR, and patient's care team when applicable to ensure all factors for a safe quality exam are met, including but not limited to; appropriate IV access, lab results, pregnancy status, oral contrast administration, contraindications to IV contrast, and transport. Correctly identifies and escorts patient to CT scanner; assists patient onto scanner; reviews exam screening questionnaire; explains the procedure to the patient accounting for physical and emotional needs, and appropriately answers any questions while maintaining ethical standards (patient confidentiality, professional conduct, etc.). Delivers patient care under the scope of license/training, demonstrating professionalism towards patients, their families, and staff always. When indicated, confirm proper IV placement and patency, and position the patient for study. Selects the appropriate scanning protocol to align with the order, patient age, and body habits. Operates CT equipment to obtain diagnostic images and information according to department protocol. Adheres to all infection control procedures, monitors patient condition during and immediately post-scan, and identifies and escalates any adverse event. Assists patient off the scanner and prepares them for discharge, arranges for or transports patients when necessary. Completes exam documentation in EHR, transmits images to PACS, cleans, and prepares room for the next exam. Demonstrates the ability to use independent judgment, ingenuity, and initiative. Maintains professional working relations and communication with all hospital personnel and participates in research programs, quality assurance, and quality improvement projects. May oversee and instruct personnel and students within the department. Attend staff meetings, in-services, and maintain required continuing education credits in accordance with Massachusetts State Licensure and the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Assumes responsibilities for on-call coverage and remain flexible in all shift coverage, rotates within department areas as required and needed. Cooperates with all personnel to promote harmony within the department. SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: - Must have the ability to adapt to changing pace within the department, with frequent interruptions. - Knowledge of anatomy, cross-sectional anatomy, physiology, medical terminology. - Knowledge of the principles of radiation physics - Knowledge of radiographic positioning and radiographic equipment. - Acquires and maintains knowledge of related topics to include, but not limited to radiation safety, universal precaution, disposal of contaminated material, proper handling of requisitions (both before and after procedure), interpersonal skills, communications and dealing with difficult situations, etc. - Effective interpersonal and communications skills both verbal and written. - Maintains inventory of exam room, maintains a clean and safe working environment. - Physical ability to assist patients for transfer from stretcher, wheelchair or in an emergent situation. - Computer skills for affective patient care and communication - Ability to provide compassionate care to patients and family - Ability to recognize emergency situations and respond appropriately, location of emergency code procedures and equipment. - Must be able to read and write English. - Must possess the ability to assess patient specific data relative to age-specific needs and provide appropriate care. - Always maintains a high standard of professionalism. - Must demonstrate flexibility and willingness to adapt to diverse roles as a member of the department team - Must possess analytical abilities necessary to acquire and effectively utilize knowledge of imaging technology QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE: Required: Must be a graduate of an approved school of Radiologic technology or related field; must possess a current Massachusetts State Radiologic Technologist license and be registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or equivalent. Required: Must be registered or eligible for CT certification by the ARRT or equivalent within the first year after the start of employment. BLS required *Advanced CT certification is required within 12 months of hire date. Employees who fail to obtain certification within 12 months will be given a 60-day grace period to achieve certification. If they are unable to obtain certification after 14 months (12 months and 2-month grace period) they will be terminated for failure to maintain certification. Preferred: Minimum of 1 year of Radiography experience.
