The university educates more than 35,000 graduate, undergraduate and professional students and generated $768 million in research funding in fiscal year 2023.University of Utah seeks a Chief Financial Officer ( CFO ) who provides leadership, oversight and stewardship for all aspects of the University’s financial resources while ensuring absolute institutional integrity on fiscal matters. The CFO is responsible for the fiscal health of the university, formulating the university’s financial strategy and directing and overseeing all financial activities and the budget processes. Reporting to the President, working closely with the Chief Operating Officer ( COO ), Provost, and Senior Vice President ( SVP ) for Health Sciences, and partnering with the senior leadership team, the CFO has direct, positive and long-term impact on the University’s mission, vision and goals (https://strategy.utah.edu/.)ResponsibilitiesThe CFO serves as a strategic advisor to senior leadership and recommends financial objectives, policies, programs and practices that ensure a sound financial structure for the University and is responsible for key finance functions within the University, including long-range financial planning, budget planning, capital financing and investments, to deliver a long-term sustainable economic model that ensures both the viability and vitality of the University.As a key institutional leader, the CFO will encourage bold thinking, bring wise counsel and be attracted to the opportunity to join an organization with a clear, compelling mission. With high EQ and strong analytical and problem-solving skills, they will be committed to the continuous evolution of a first-class finance function, invested in the professional development and growth of their team, and will embrace the opportunity to forge strong, supportive relationships across the university and with the broader “U” community.Minimum QualificationsIdeal candidates will have demonstrated experience and success in the following:Fifteen-plus years of experience in financial leadership roles in large, complex environments, with a thorough understanding of all elements of financial management, including strategy and business planning with exposure to a broad range of financial and risk management principles and practices. Experience working in public higher education highly preferred.A strong strategic orientation, with the ability to serve as a thought partner and advisor to the COO and president, as well as collaborate closely with other leaders on the senior leadership team and members of the board of trustees.Track record of expertise in financial models, financial analysis, performance measures and metrics to understand complex situations, inform decision-making and communicate decisions.A collaborative leader with experience in management roles providing operational leadership and building and developing strong teams, including best-in-class professional development opportunities for staff.Experience or strong knowledge of healthcare organizations and the working integration between a healthcare organization and its higher education counterpart.Knowledge of best-in-class financial processes and technologies that drive efficiency, reduce costs and ensure delivery of reliable, timely and accurate data for reporting purposes.Demonstrated success in roles requiring the ability to communicate clearly, effectively and collegially with many constituencies who contribute to the advancement of a university.Strong academic credentials required, including a preference for an M.B.A. and/or related graduate degree(s) or CPA .PreferencesType Benefited StaffSpecial Instructions SummaryUniversity of Utah is being assisted in this recruitment by Spencer Stuart.
