Job Overview

AIMS Locum Tenens is seeking a Radiation Therapy Medical Physicist to support the Department of Radiology and Radiation Oncology at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. This role involves ensuring the safe and accurate delivery of radiation therapy through precise dosimetry, equipment calibration, and quality assurance.

General Tasks

Productivity: Maintain a level of productivity comparable to other professionals performing similar services.

Peer Review and Improvement: Participate in peer review and performance improvement activities.

Aseptic Techniques: Comply with infection control guidelines, including proper handling, storage, and disposal of infectious waste.

Safety Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols, including radiation safety, to ensure the safety of patients and staff.

Emergency Response: Perform efficiently in emergency situations, following established protocols.

Legal and Ethical Awareness: Apply an understanding of legal issues in all aspects of patient care.

Specific Tasks

Beam Data Analysis: Measure and analyze beam data for treatment machines, ensuring accuracy in the treatment planning system. Verify that beam data is correctly entered and tabulated.

Treatment Planning: Provide input for the clinical determination of radiation dose distributions and ensure the accuracy of dosimetry calculations. Participate in 3D conformal radiotherapy, IMRT, VMAT, SBRT, respiratory-gated treatments, and SRS planning and delivery.

Quality Assurance: Perform quality assurance checks following maintenance of treatment machines to ensure compliance with regulations and standard operating procedures.

Training and Education: Provide education and training for dosimetrists, radiation therapists, nurses, and residents in support of Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs and technical staff.

Radiation Monitoring: Assist in the development and maintenance of radiation monitoring and quality assurance procedures to ensure compliance with licensure requirements and hospital radiation safety regulations.

Simulation and Treatment: Assist with simulations and treatment planning, including the use of Local Area Network Server and data management systems.

Documentation: Attend all scheduled weekly chart rounds, quality impact, and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) meetings, and ensure thorough documentation of treatment plans and patient records.

Schedule and On-Call Requirements

Duty Hours: Services shall be provided Monday through Friday, between the hours of 0630 and 1830. Shifts will normally be scheduled for an eight and a half (8.5) hour period, to include an uncompensated thirty (30) minute meal break. In no instance shall the HCW exceed eighty (80) hours per two (2) week period.

On-Call Hours: In addition to regular services, the HCW shall equitably share On-Call coverage with other Radiation Therapy Medical Physicists within the Radiology Oncology Clinic. On-Call services begin at the end of the normal workday during the workweek (Monday through Friday) and shall continue until commencement of the following workday. Weekend On-Call coverage (Saturday and Sunday) shall begin from 0700 Saturday to 0700 Monday unless the weekend incorporates a Federal holiday. In such cases, On-Call services will extend from the close of the preceding workday until the beginning of the first following workday. HCW shall normally provide On-Call coverage approximately every other week based on 2 FTE Radiation Therapy Medical Physicists. When paged, the HCW shall phone the MTF within ten (10) minutes. Compensation for On-Call services is separately priced.

Call-Back Hours: While On-Call, the HCW may be required to return to the MTF to render patient care. The HCW shall respond to the page within ten (10) minutes and arrive at the Radiology department, prepared to provide services, within sixty (60) minutes of the MTF’s request. The Contractor will be reimbursed for not less than two (2) hours when the HCW is called in. It is estimated that up to 100 hours of call-back hours may be required annually.

Overage Hours: When required, to ensure completion of services that extend beyond the normal close of business, the HCW shall remain on duty in excess of the scheduled shift. The HCW will be given an equal amount of compensatory time to be scheduled upon mutual agreement of the HCW and the Government representative. All compensatory time must be used within a two (2) week period.

Qualifications

Education: Master’s or Doctorate degree in Physics, Medical Physics, or a related physical science from an accredited college or university. Must meet qualifications required by the American College of Radiation Oncology.

Certification: Subspecialty certification (or board eligibility) as a Medical Physicist by one of the following: American Board of Medical Physics in Radiation Oncology Physics, American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Radiological Physics or Radiological Physics, or Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine.

Experience: At least three years of experience as a Therapeutic Medical Physicist in a hospital setting within the last five years, including experience with stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT).

Licensure/Registration: Listed on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission licenses as an Authorized Medical Physicist within the past five years.

References: Provide two letters of recommendation written within the last three years attesting to your clinical skills. One must be from a supervisory medical physicist or direct medical supervisor who has observed and evaluated your work.

The primary site of services is the Department of Radiology and Radiation Oncology at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA, with potential assignments at associated Branch Medical Clinics and Tricare Prime Clinics within a 40-mile commuting radius. Notification will be provided 48 hours prior to reassignment.
