Our state-of-the-art hospital in Jacksonville includes 34 operating rooms that include an IMRI OR suite and a dedicated endovascular OR suite. We use the best modern equipment and advanced technologies to create an environment that merges the art of healing with the science of medicine.Under the direct supervision and direction of the operating surgeon, functions in the first or second assistant role. Does not function concurrently as a scrub tech.QualificationsEDUCATION : High School diploma or equivalentCertification as a surgical first assistant or completion of surgical specialty checklist for assigned areas within six months of hire.EXPERIENCE : Minimum three to five years in the surgical scrub (Surgical Tech) role; experience and technical proficiency in the First Surgical Assistant role is preferredCOMPETENCY: Experience in Orthopedics, GYN and robotic procedures strongly preferred.JOB KNOWLEDGE: Methods and performance of safe and effective exposure, tissue handling, hemostasis and wound closure that minimize potential tissue injury and protect the patient.Ability to identify the pattern of surgical approach and to anticipates steps of a surgical procedure and the first or second assistant role during each step. Recognizes and names surgical instruments and specific intraoperative situations where they are used, as well as alternative instruments that may be used. Principles of surgical asepsis and recommended practices governing exposure to bloodborne pathogens and use of personal protective equipment.ADDL CONSIDERATIONS: This position entails standing for prolonged periods of time, mental focus on the surgical site and concentration on the sequence of steps and details of the procedure. The role may require working with elbows raised or maintaining stillness in one position for an extended period. First assisting in surgery requires manual skill and dexterity, ability to follow verbal direction and to visualize the surgical site, distinguish colors. Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) competency.
