Job Summary:
The Phlebotomist provides expertise in blood draws and specimen preparation, playing a crucial role in delivering high-quality care to patients and partners. Their ability to put patients at ease and obtain sufficient samples with minimal discomfort across a diverse demographic is essential to our commitment to excellence.
Key Responsibilities:Perform blood draws, label specimens, and prepare specimens for analysis, including centrifugation.Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture process and other specimen collection methods (e.g., urine or fecal).Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles effectively.Understand and follow all physician orders related to specimen collection.Match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes, ensuring accuracy in labeling and processing (centrifuging, splitting, freezing) as required by test orders.Verify the correctness of all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.Package specimens appropriately for transport.Store specimen samples according to required temperatures and protocols to maintain specimen integrity.Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations at all times.Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintain a clean working environment.Attend annual department trainings to stay updated on best practices.Respond to telephone inquiries and read laboratory results as needed.Perform other duties as assigned.
