This position Inspects and tests new and existing electrical installations in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings as well as equipment, components, and parts related to transmission, control or converting electrical power, signaling and detection equipment, medical equipment, home and business electronic equipment, and related products, for compliance with the Florida Building Code, National Electric Code (NEC), safety standards, local laws, local ordinances and other County, State and Federal regulations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
ELECTRICAL INSPECTORInspects new and existing electrical permitted installations in residential, commercial and industrial buildings within the city limits to ensure adherence to the Florida Building Code, the National Electrical Code and local laws and ordinancesConfers with architects, engineers, contractors, attorneys, property owners and other regarding inspections, building materials and practices, and code enforcement mattersInspects alteration and repair jobs involving electrical systemsInvestigates complaints relating to electrical systems in construction, repair, and alterations including interviewing property owners, tenants and complainants to determine nature of violations and recommending corrective measuresChecks existing wiring installations prior to use such as special electrical devices in order to determine the ability of the installation to carry additional load without dangerAssists and informs electricians of the proper location of incoming services and wiring permits; examines all electrical signs before and after installations for correct electrical wiringEnters work sites under construction which may necessitate climbing, crawling, or accessing areas where limited space is availablePrepares reports and maintains inspection records of work performedInvestigates complaints of electrical violationsAnswers inquiries concerning building code requirements as they relate to electrical systemsPerforms related work as required
JOB REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT
ELECTRICAL INSPECTOR MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
High School Diploma or equivalent. Qualifying work experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.Must be certified as required by the State of Florida, Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board (BCAIB), as an Electrical Inspector, andMust have five (5) years construction experience in the electrical discipline in a supervisory capacity,
orMust have five (5) years construction experience in the electrical discipline and five (5) years as an active State Certified Electrical Inspector,
orMust be a Certified Electrical Journeyman for not less than five (5) years and shall have no less than seven (7) years of practical electrical experience, andShall possess a current Certification of Competency as a Master Electrician Contractor or an Electrical Contractor or a Journeyman Electrician issued by at least one of the following entities:Florida Electrical Contractors Licensing BoardBroward County Central Examining Board of ElectriciansMiami-Dade County Construction Trades Qualifying Board, issued on or after January 1, 1968
7. Or, shall be licensed by the Florida DBPR-FBPE as an Engineer in the discipline requested and having practiced for at least three (3) years
8. Possess a Florida driver's license with an acceptable driving record, or be able to obtain one by date of hire.
NOTE: Required certifications must be kept current to continue employment in this class.

Depending on the number of applications and the quality of their education and experience, the examination may consist of one or more of the following tests: Evaluation of Training and Experience, Oral Interview, Written Examination, or other assessment method. Applicants must attain a minimum score of 70 in each part of the examination to qualify. All successful applicants will be required to pass a medical examination, including drug screening, prior to appointment.
An eligible veteran who enters an open-competitive examination shall receive preference points added to the total passing score earned in the examination as provided for in the Florida Statutes.
