Lead, direct and perform work on new and existing plumbing systems. Perform preventative and corrective maintenance tasks on above and below grade utility systems including but not limited to potable water, natural gas, compressed gases, circulating and chilled water, steam systems, fire protection systems, building utilities, treatment systems and grease traps. Ability to perform asbestos removal / abatement on existing systems. Perform utility scanning in accordance with local procedures and document findings for upcoming excavations work on site. Respond to trouble calls related to immediate system issues to help maintain continuity of operations. Identify and develop improvements to existing facilities or methods of operation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIESDetermine material requirements and select appropriate materials to perform a job.Work in accordance to very general supervisor’s instructions, complex drawings and sketches and specifications.Plan the layout and establish the sequence for the installation of plumbing systems and pressurized piping systems such as pneumatic control systems, hydraulic systems, steam lines, etc.Install special process piping such as boiler retubing, testing program piping, acid systems and critical piping particular to the Laboratory where special preparations are required.Know thoroughly and apply all state and local regulations covering the installation and repair of plumbing and pressurized piping systems to meet applicable plumbing codes.Must know types of piping required for special jobs, and the components to each piping system (e.g., silver solder joints on wrought copper fittings and copper pipe, HDPE piping applications etc..).Perform incidental work outside the plumbing craft jurisdiction which can be accomplished in a safe manner, within a minimal time frame, with minimal training.Install underground systems to effectively replace or repair in kind piping systems for city water, circulating water, natural gas, fire water, and storm and sanitary sewer systems.Install and remove insulation as applicable to effectively perform required maintenance.Work from elevated surfaces and scaffolds.Perform preventive maintenance of applicable utility systems to maintain continuity of operations.Recommend and assist in the specification of materials needed to replenish on-hand parts and materials, and parts and materials needed to complete job assignments.Perform utility scans in accordance with manufacturers instruction and local procedure.
ADDITIONAL GENERAL RESPONSIBILITESFollow general established procedures and select appropriate tools and materials.Follow rough engineering sketches and detailed complex drawings.Maintain clean, safe and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures, and handling and disposing of hazardous chemicals and waste.Must be able to qualify and maintain qualifications including but not limited to asbestos worker, radiological contamination worker, silica worker and other industrial hygiene areas as necessary.Perform work in accordance with applicable safety, environmental, radiological and security requirements.Perform Continuing Training as required. Employees will attend training and other programs to enhance their skills, as requestedReceive oral or written instructions from management.Perform equal or lower classified work as directed.Assignment of such work will be within the occupational progression insofar as possible.
Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill
High school or vocational school graduate or the equivalent with the ability to read, write and perform general mathematics of the variety usually learned in a high school or vocational school course. Must pass a periodic physical examination.ANDCompletion of a state accredited skilled trades program resulting in an educational degree or equivalent in the field of this position with 4 years of experienceORCompletion of a state approved certified apprenticeship program resulting in qualification of Journeyman or equivalent in the field of this position with 4 years of experience.
Preferred Skills
Preferred to possess a Journeyman qualification from a recognized trade union in the field of this position.
