Description:
Conduct wear and friction tribology experiments, by operating various instruments and equipment in the lab.
Interpret and analyze results, recognize erroneous or unexpected outcomes, and make suggestions for a path forward.
Characterize material structure and performance, using various microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, including: Optical Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Laser-Scanning Confocal Microscopy, Surface Profilometry, and Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR).
Properly document and report all experimental data
Present findings and results at team meetings.
Prepare and press samples for tribology testing
Coordinate machining of test samples, and test fixtures.
Troubleshoot and calibrate instruments
Author and prepare instrument manuals and SOPs.
Participate and follow all safety policies and best practices
Support process safety management (PSM) by maintaining laboratory safety documentation.
Order and purchase supplies when needed
Maintain chemical, resin and experimental sample inventory.
Coordinate outside laboratory testing, including shipping samples following proper DOT rules and regulations.
Quals--
BS in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or related field
Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
Knowledge or working experience with polymers is preferred.
Ability to learn a wide variety of testing methods and instruments.
Prior experience with mechanical testing equipment is preferred.
Experience with LabVIEW, and CAD software is a plus.
Experience with surface profilometry, and other micro-analysis techniques is a plus.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively prioritize, organize, and plan responsibilities.
Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.
