Job Summary
Uses skills as a seasoned, experienced engineering professional in a specialized engineering field on a major training and / or research effort.
Assignments typically require concentration in a field of application where subject matter knowledge relevant to research objectives and methodology is of great value in understanding and establishing engineering design criteria.
Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
Uses professional software-engineering concepts.
Develops and proposes software-engineering plans and specifications with limited scope and complexity.
Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data from which answers can be readily obtained. Development with hardware is not anticipated beyond ensuring that developed software functions properly with necessary hardware.
The focus of this role is to provide software-engineering support as part of a neuroengineering team developing brain-computer-interface technology. Potential topics of work will include:- Development of advanced GUIs for custom experimental tasks- Integration of custom technology to enable control of personal devices- Development of natural-language models to improve neural decoding- Design and implementation of efficient databases to host neural data- Exploring potential strategies for improving the efficiency of existing neural-processing pipelinesThe final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. The Department of Neurological Surgery at UCSF is home to leading physicians and scientists dedicated to treating patients with neurosurgical disorders and to the search for better therapies and cures. Our mission is to provide the best clinical care to our patients, investigate the most promising advances in neuroscience research, and train tomorrow's leaders in neurosurgery.
We are recognized by U.S News & World Report to be the #3 hospital for neurosurgery and neurology services in the country. We have neurosurgery services at all major hospitals in the San Francisco Bay Area, providing a full range of exceptional neurosurgical subspecialty care.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training3+ years of related experienceThorough knowledge and experience with engineering principles and methods to independently perform the full range of engineering professional design work.Thorough knowledge necessary to apply principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments.Demonstrated organizational and decision-making abilities to prioritize competing work assignments in order to meet deadlines and adherence to quality standards.Strong analytical and judgment skills to independently conduct analyses and develop appropriate recommendations.Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills.Ability to work in a collaborative manner; identify challenges and barriers and recommend resolutions.Ability to lead and influence others.
Preferred Qualifications
2+ years of professional experience involving Python development1 + years of backend-development experience, preferably with real-time systems1+ years of frontend-development experience, preferably with a focus on intuitive-GUI creation1+ years of data-analysis experience, preferably with time-series data and/or data recorded from electrical sensors
