ABOUT THE ROLE We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Project Engineering Leader to oversee the engineering design team for a significant 1.25 million square foot laboratory facility for a leading biotechnology company in San Francisco, CA. This role is crucial for ensuring the successful execution of the project from the schematic and construction documents design phases through construction administration and successful startup over an anticipated timeline of approximately 8 years.
HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL DO Works in partnership with the Project Technical Director and overall project management to ensure the success of the project, including acting as the face of the engineering team to the Client/Client team, developing innovative industry leading solutions to technical issues, staffing the project's engineering team, tracking engineering disciplines' financial performance, managing engineering team communication, and upholding the Quality Process. Going above and beyond minimum criteria as needed to meet the client's needs.
Project Leadership: Lead and manage the engineering team throughout all project phases. Manage engineering communication and act as the face of the engineering team to the Client/Client Team. Develop and maintain engineering design schedules, ensuring timely delivery of milestones. Collaborate with project management team for overall project schedules. Coordinate with architects, consultants, clients, and stakeholders to ensure project alignment with client goals and regulatory requirements. Manage engineering consultants and assist project management team in validating consultant invoices.
Design and Engineering: Oversee the development of engineering designs, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations. Review engineering documents, specifications, construction drawings, reports, studies, and other deliverables for conformance with client goals and approved scopes of work. Ensure the integration of sustainable design practices and innovative engineering solutions.
Technical Oversight: Provide technical leadership and guidance to the engineering team. Resolve complex engineering issues and ensure quality control of all engineering deliverables. Ensure adherence to safe operations and maintenance standards throughout the project lifecycle.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all engineering work complies with local, state, and federal regulations and other requirements of authorities having jurisdiction. Assist construction manager in defining phased construction solutions, early work packages, and early equipment packages, as required. Secure a professional engineering license in California.
Client and Stakeholder Management: Serve as a primary point of contact for the client, project stakeholders, and client user groups. Conduct regular project meetings and presentations to update clients and stakeholders on progress. Address client concerns and ensure client satisfaction throughout the project.
Budget and Resource Management: Create and maintain engineering staffing plans in Deltek, ensuring project is staffed effectively. Allocate resources efficiently to meet project deadlines and quality standards. Monitor project financials and ensure work conforms to the approved fee allocations. Provide regular updates to firm leadership on project performance.
Location and Travel: Candidates that are local to the project site are preferred. If not local, travel up to 50% of the time to the project site, other CannonDesign offices client meetings, and stakeholder engagements as required.

HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED Minimum of 15 years of relevant experience required. High level specialist in S&T projects, especially those with construction values exceeding $300 million. Current PE in either Mechanical or Electrical in the US required, along with the ability to get a PE in California. LEED Certification or other sustainable building certification preferred. Strong understanding of BIM implementation for large multidisciplinary projects with external design partners and consultants. Assist project team in BIM management decisions. Strong project management and relationship management skills. Professional Acumen and maturity demonstrated by the ability to communicate authentically and respectfully. Exceptional problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with a focus on delivering innovative and practical engineering solutions. Exceptional client and people leadership and team management skills with the ability to motivate and guide a diverse engineering team and negotiate win-win design solutions to complex challenges with colleagues and teaming partners. Proficient in Deltek or other project resource and financial planning software required.
The salary range for this position to be filled in San Francisco, CA is $210,000 to $262,500 annually. This salary range is the range we believe is the anticipated range of possible base compensation at the timing of the posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the anticipated salary range for the position. Employees may be eligible for discretionary bonuses.
