DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe City of Houston is seeking to hire an entry-journey level Environmental Investigator in the Public Works Department. This position primarily implements the requirements of the dental amalgam program and the industrial waste survey ensuring full compliance with the City's approved Pretreatment Program. The approved pretreatment program ensures that the operation of the City's 38 wastewater treatment plants and the collection system are not interrupted due to industrial discharges.
This position involves 50% field work including but not limited to inspecting various industrial facilities and dental offices in the City of Houston service area to determine compliance. Additional duties include reviewing submittals from the industries and dental offices, updating and maintaining compliance tracking software (Linko), preparing clear and concise written reports and enforcement documents, and performing other related duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate must have the ability to: Maintain effective working relationships with facility contacts and co-workers; Review plumbing plans, facility maps, process flow diagrams, and water usage; Review work of self and colleagues for quality assurance and quality control; Communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing; and Work effectively independently and as a member of a workgroup.
WORKING CONDITIONSThe position routinely requires lifting of moderately heavy items (up to 40 pounds) and occasionally requires long periods of walking on rough surfaces. There are occasional exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture, air pollution, and raw sewage. This position may involve infrequent exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises, and minor burns.This is a Department of Houston Public Works Management position at the Tier II Leve l.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTSRequires a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Health Engineering or a closely related degree.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSOne (1) year of pollution/environmental control experience is required.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTSNone.PREFERENCES
Preference will be given to applicants with experience implementing pretreatment program requirements and dental amalgam program requirements, industrial wastewater treatment, and investigation of industrial users upstream from treatment plants.
