South Mountain Community College (SMCC) reflects the diversity of the surrounding community, a rich mix of rural, urban, and suburban neighborhoods. Many of our students arrive from Phoenix, Laveen, Tempe, Guadalupe, and the surrounding area to attend classes at the main campus or our offsite facility in Guadalupe; we also offer evening courses in Laveen at Betty Fairfax High School.
Of the approximately 5,000 students enrolled at SMCC nearly 70 percent were first-generation college students and 48 percent intended to transfer to a university to further their education. Job Summary
South Mountain Community College is currently seeking a Laboratory Specialist Supervisor. This role will supervise and train staff in the preparation of equipment and materials used for lecture and laboratory experiments in the physical lab sciences (Chemistry, Geo sciences, and Physics). This position develops and implements laboratory safety procedures that adhere to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards, as well as outreach activities that promote science education for the department.
Essential Functions
35% - Assists faculty in the design, pilot, and trouble-shooting of physical science labs, prepares lab set ups and ensures all materials are available for lab.
25% - Supervises science lab technicians and student workers as well as grant recipients working in the labs
20% - Maintains budget, stock room, prep room, inventory and orders materials as needed
15% - Helps break down labs and clean labs and equipment including inventory and lab prep sheet maintenance through troubleshooting labs
5% - Assembles and repairs equipment
Minimum Qualifications
Associate's degree from a regionally accredited institution, four (4) years of directly related full-time experience such as providing assistance to students in an instructional setting; and/or preparing, maintaining and delivering equipment, supplies or other related instructional materials used for laboratory activities including two years of lead work or senior level experience.
OR
High School Diploma/GED and six (6) years of directly related full-time experience such as providing assistance to students in an instructional setting; and/or preparing, maintaining and delivering equipment, supplies or other related instructional materials used for laboratory activities including two years of lead work or senior level experience.
Desired Qualifications
A. Bachelor's degree earned from an accredited institution of higher learning
B. Experience working in an academic laboratory setting
C. Experience providing guidance related to laboratory experiments
D. Knowledge of or ability to help pilot science laboratories for college level classes for the physical sciences
E. Experience in maintaining a budget
F. Experience in supervising laboratory staff including laboratory technicians and college work study students
Special Working Conditions
Exposure to chemicals and organisms which may present hazards if not handled properly. May be required to lift objects weighing up to 50 lbs. Requires flexible work schedule in coordination with the student semester and class schedules; afternoon, evening and weekend hours may be required.
