Job Summary
Our laboratory investigates the biology and targeted therapy of myeloid blood cancers, particularly myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) and acute myeloid leukemia ( AML ). Under minimal supervision, the successful applicant will be responsible for planning, organizing, directing and/or controlling all aspects pertaining to laboratory functions, enforcing laboratory rules and regulations, managing laboratory finances, inventory, equipment maintenance and personnel.
We are looking for highly enthusiastic, self-motivated individuals with a strong work ethic who can interact well with others as part of a team. Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to be flexible in work practices are highly valued characteristics which interested candidates should possess.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions
Forecasts, develops and implements policies and procedures in the areas of day-to-day laboratory function, laboratory staffing and laboratory budgetary goals and objectives that are consistent with the lab’s and University of Utah’s policies.
Enforces laboratory rules and regulations
Manages laboratory finances
Manages laboratory inventory
Maintains laboratory equipment
Places orders for the lab, obtains quotes, engages with customer service and sales reps
Facilitates cooperative and collaborative community and institutional relationships.
Ensures customer satisfaction by analyzing complaints, concerns and suggestions and providing appropriate follow-through.
Ensures competency of staff through the development and/or presentation of educational programs and through ongoing staff performance evaluations.
Problem Solving
This position includes supervision of laboratory personnel, who may refer sensitive or unusual situations to the incumbent and/or the lab technician. If incumbent and/or lab technician cannot find a resolution, the situation is referred to the supervisor. Work is performed in accordance with the supervision of senior laboratory personnel and through periodic meetings with superior.

Minimum Qualifications
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related area of assignment or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) and 4 – 6 years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of assigned department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required.
Master’s degree in a related area may be preferred.
