Mechanical Engineering Technical Supervisor

to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will play a key role in the hands-on day-to-day responsibilities in support of the Engineering Division's technical projects across the many scientific programs we support. The position will regularly apply engineering, scientific and other technical concepts and practices with an emphasis on fabrication, assembly, installation, and manufacturing operations.

What You Will Do:

In a union environment, provide substantial day-to-day leadership and technical guidance to LBL mechanical technicians and associates.Participate in personnel actions for work unit employees including hiring selection, training, performance management, salary administration, employee development, promotions, general welfare, and disciplinary actions.Direct activities, equipment, and staff assignments to ensure technical support meets the Engineering Division's project funding and schedule objectives.Ensure adherence to LBL quality, technical, environmental and safety standards.Provide mechanical/technical guidance to various levels of scientific and engineering staff on design, materials, manufacturing techniques, assembly, installation and testing.Translate specific project objectives into technical work instructions and assignments for staff.Provide accurate cost, staffing and schedule estimates for unchecked designs and assemblies.Manage projects with efficient utilization of staff, schedule and budget.Train staff on equipment and procedures; ensure technical continuity and safety training for staff.Collaborate on engineering projects across all LBL scientific divisions.Oversee precision mechanical assembly and Ultra-High Vacuum (UHV) assembly.Actively participate on the Mechanical Engineering Department's management team.Provide oral and written reporting on project status to project and upper management stakeholders.What is Required:

Knowledge equivalent to Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent work experience.5 years of supervisory experience in a technical environment with union and non-union employees.Significant technical experience with the installation and commissioning of precision scientific, mechanical, hydraulic, vacuum, and electrical systems.Substantial technical supervisory experience with advanced knowledge and judgment in most of the following areas:

Ultra-High Vacuum (UHV) systems including RGA's, vacuum pumping, and bakeout techniquesCryogenic systemsPermanent and electromagnet handling and constructionWelding, machining, and mechanical assembly processes, and technique3D CAD Design and drafting, with the ability to create working engineering drawingsProject management abilities defined as the ability to control scope, cost and scheduleMetrology, inspection, quality control, and test methods related to manufacturing

Experience with material handling equipment and techniques.Familiarity with OSHA rules and regulations, machine shop and research laboratory safe work practices.Knowledge of fabrication and construction principles, materials, tools and processes.Ability to interact and communicate efficiently with researchers, engineers, designers, machinists, and other engineering technicians to provide a high level of customer service.Ability to supervise and safely direct activities of small teams of technical personnel.Ability to efficiently interact and negotiate with scientists, engineers, and technical staff to define work and achieve project goals.Excellent oral and written communication and documentation skills.Salary:

The full salary range of this position is between $103,560.00 to $174,756.00 annually and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $116,496 to $142,404 annually depending upon the candidate's skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.This position may be subject to a background check.
