Laboratory Supervisor - Chemistry

Job Summary:

Directs and controls daily operations of assigned Laboratory section(s). Also performs the duties of an MT/MLT. Will provide consultative services to the medical staff and participate in any performance improvement monitoring system for lab and hospital, and will assist in the maintenance and development of the laboratory computer system. Special projects or other assignments may be given with expectations to be completed in a specified time frame. Supervision given to Specimen Processor, Office Manager, Phlebotomy Registrar, Medical Laboratory Technician and Medical Technologist. Interrelationships with the Technical Staff, Phlebotomy Staff, Managerial Staff and other Hospital employees.

Responsibilities: Must demonstrate competency in service to different patient populations such as; Neonatal, Pediatrics, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatrics. Performs only those waived, moderate, or highly complex tests authorized by CLIA and must possess a degree of skill commensurate with individual's education, training or experience and technical abilities. Follow the Laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results. Move and maneuver throughout the Lab without assistance. May be mandated to stay over should the situation arise. Maintain records that demonstrate the proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient samples. Adhere to the Laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrumental and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed. Follow the Laboratory's established corrective action policies and procedure whenever test systems are not within laboratory's established acceptable level of performance. Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance on reporting of test results and either must correct the problem or immediately notify the technical consultant, clinical consultant, or director. Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications. Perform a wide variety of laboratory procedures requiring independent judgement and using both manual and automated methods in assigned departments such as Hematology, Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Microbiology, Immunology, and other disciplines as introduced into the laboratory environment. Perform first-line troubleshooting procedures as well as complicated and less frequently performed procedures. Maintain quality control and assist in checking work accuracy before it is reported out and be able to recognize differences in expected results for newborns to geriatrics. Perform maintenance-daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed instruments on and equipment as appropriate. Perform calibration of equipment as required. Demonstrate an ongoing awareness of the critical nature and essential high standards of quality required in the laboratory. Requirements

Education and Experience:

B.S. Degree in Medical Technology or related field or an Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology with HEW certification. Successful completion of a registry or certification exam given by a Nationally recognized certifying agency. Minimum five years in a clinical laboratory required. Required Skills/Abilities:

Set appropriate examples in the achievement of the above-mentioned standards. Work in a variety of situations. May work alone or in various groups on any shift on any day of the week under direct supervision of the Laboratory Director. Effectively operate laboratory equipment, unassisted. Knowledgeable in medical technology. Possess a great work ethic. Must be able to handle stress of working efficiently with frequent interruptions. Must be able to multi-task. Must maintain a clean and professional appearance Must follow the Hospitals Personal Appearance policy Physical Requirements:

Sitting, standing and walking 3-6 hours per day Occasionally lifts up to 50 pounds Close eye work (small figures) and Minimal color discrimination. Daily exposure to Bloodborne pathogens, biohazardous materials and body fluids
