Job Title: Network EngineerClearance Required: Public TrustWork Location: Hybrid; Onsite in Asheville, NC with telework TBDAlpha Omega is seeking a qualified Network Engineer to join our current team supporting the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). To meet NOAA and NESDIS mission objectives, NCEI ingests large volumes of data and is engaged in substantial software development to produce authoritative data sets and derived products and services. NCEI ingests, archives, and stewards NOAA's observational data, model outputs and derived information for private and public use, while also generating products and services. Our contract Team supports the NCEI mission by providing system administration support for NCEI infrastructure, data management and software development activities.This position requires an experienced Subject Matter Expert (SME) that will require sufficient experience to recommend and implement datacenter networking solutions derived from requirements provided by NCEI Leadership. The person in this position must possess the ability to influence NCEI staff and leadership regarding best practices and network administration policies. The network infrastructure supporting the NCEI datacenters is primarily Juniper equipment. Juniper network devices have been an integral part of the NCEI mission for decades and require daily maintenance and support. The Network Engineer is responsible for planning, designing, monitoring, troubleshooting, and maintaining the network infrastructure at NCEI. This position works closely with the Server Administrator teams.Key Responsibilities:Configure, install, and maintain various network devices and services (e.g. routers, switches, firewalls, DNS, DHCP)Perform network maintenance and system upgrades including service packs, patches, hot fixes and security configurationsMonitor performance and ensure system availability and reliabilityMonitor system resource utilization, trending, and capacity planningWork within established configuration and change management policies to ensure awareness, approval and success of changes made to the network infrastructureSelect and implement security tools, policies, and procedures in conjunction with the security teamLiaise with vendors and other IT personnel for problem resolution

Required Qualifications:Education:

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Computer Science or related field

Experience/Skills:6+ years of work experience responsible for designing, deploying, and operating computer networks (LAN/WAN)JNCIS-ENT / CCNA or higherIn-depth understanding and practical knowledge of networking systems such as switches, firewalls, and routersAbility to analyze and evaluate networks, identify issues and provide solutions to ensure networks are operating efficientlyWorking knowledge of network protocols (TCP/UDP, DHCP, DNS, BGP) and experience with IPv4 and IPv6Working knowledge of physical infrastructure design including structured cabling and fiber-optic cablingExperience with fiber channel and managing brocade switches (FOS)Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously and delivering against deadlines

Preferred Qualifications:Federal government experience a definite plusExperience implementing automation using ansible and pythonExperience with Linux based operating systemsExperience with Git, GitlabExperience with rancid, ZabbixKnowledge of the full software development lifecycle, with exposure to Agile or iterative approaches to delivery preferredFamiliarity with programming languages, libraries and APIs
